I still haven't decided whether I really NEED a FP gauge for my '03. I talked to a mechanic at the local Cummins Service Facility and he says that the lift pump in the 3rd gen. engines has not been much of a problem. Some failures, yes, but not an epidemic. To me that pretty much reinforces what I've read on this forum and in the TDR. The mechanic suggested that if I am really worried about it to get a spare pump and carry it with me. I said I was also thinking of installing a fuel pressure gauge. He said if I did install one and there was a lift pump failure that having a gauge wouldn't benefit me, the driver, nearly as much as much as it would the mechanic doing troubleshooting. Does what I've just said make sense to you folks? Did I likely understand the mechanic correctly?
So, this non-mechanic (me) has a brilliant idea. Tell me what you think of this: Install a fuel pressure gauge (mechanical type) in the engine compartment. That way, I would not have to figure where to mount the gauge in the passenger compartment. I already have a Westech Combo gauge in a single pod below the grab handle. I want to keep the grab handle (my wife uses it). I already have a trailer brake controller, a tire pressure monitor device, and an add-on satellite radio mounted on and below the dash near the driver. I could mount the gauge in a pod on top of the dash or in a pod above the rear view mirror, but those pods seem to only come in versions to hold 3 or more gauges and, having a 6-sp, I don't see the need for other gauges.
What do you think? Am I nuts?
