Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) fuel pressure and B20

Hey guys,

I may be a moran here, but are we supposed to be running special filters for the new ULSD. I've been running b20 and my pressure is down on average about 3-4psi and seems to drop faster than before. Was 17 idle and about 12 a WOT, but now its about 14 idle and I saw 6psi a wot today. Just thought maybe I used the wrong filter. Thanks

Have you changed your filter? ULSD diesel is supposed to clean out the tank. . but I would have thought B20 would do the same.

There's no special fuel filter required for ULSD and your pressure shouldn't have dropped. I would try a fresh fuel filter before looking elsewhere.

well changed both filters and got my pressure back must have been some junk still in the lines and such. i've been running bio for about a month now and will until we can't anymore for winter

If you're running b20 and/or ulsd, you might have a clogged or dislodged fuel pickup. Take a look at this thread:

Try DavidC's trick of blowing some air back into the tank and see if it changes your pressure readings. If so, you've probably got gunk in your tank.....

My fuel pressure dropped when I first started running B20/B100. I had to change the filters a few times within 1000 or so miles as it cleaned out the system. Now I can run anything I want with no change in pressure.

yes i'd heard about the cleaning out the tank and such. My filters only had 1200 on them so something got to them. Still running good pressure now, so i'll keep an eye on it.

B20 is now available in Park City and I planning on using it soon. One question I have, is it suitable for winter use? Based on bbodammer's comment, sounds like it could be a problem, eh? We had some -10* mornings here last year which gelled the lines till I put some Howes in the tank. I've already heard about changing the filters a couple of times after using it. TIA

from what I hear we cannot run it or at least not without additive. I was told that most stations around here will not sell it after a certain time, but you know how rumors are. Maybe some others will chime in and give some concrete facts. i would like to keep running it it only for the vp's sake

I run b50 till the temp drops to the high to mid teens,then blend down to b20 or so, depending on the temp. Just keep an eyeball on the fp gauge.

Keep a few gallons of k1 around and if it is 0 when you get up, dump in 2-3 gallons, it will cut the bd and keep it from clouding, hence plugging the filter.

When running bd in the winter, only fill the tank to 3/4 full and if coooold weather hits, flood it with#2 or k1.

The kerosene is a good idea. Most additives won't do squat for bio-diesel. It only works on the D#2 so the 20% bio still gels.

I was talking with a farmer from Minnesota who was running B2 (2% bio) and his filter plugged at -13F. I was surprised that so little bio shut him down.

Some guy's keep little jars of their favorite blend outside so they can see what it looks like in the morning. When it starts to gel. . you have to do something.

Well, around here, it get down to the low teens and single digits pretty regularly, so w/ that in mind, I picked up some Stanadyne today and will use it on the next fill up. Heck, it was 26* here this morning. The BD station is where all of the municapality buses fill up. I wonder what they are going to do?

It may not be the bd. Last december I put in 1/2 a tank of speedeeey way pd and also bought a gallon to test bd with, to test jell points of the bd/pd mix.

My truck started actin up around18-20 degrees.

I thought the bd was doin it... ... . Nope it was the pd, they didnt put any antijell in the pd at the end of december??????? I finally put straight pd in the freezer,and it clouded right up at 18-20d.

I keep a jelly jar on the cup holder of whatever i mix for the tank, just to see what it's doin.
