i have an electric one. some people have had problems with the sending unit going out due to micro pulses from the cp3. if you run a rubber hose to the sender you should be fine. there are lots of posts on that. i just dont like isolators, which you would have to use to run a mech guage.
I have used a Westach electric sender attached directly to the bottom of the fuel filter housing using a special banjo bolt. I have 140,000 miles on this setup. I didn't like the idea of a mechanical isolator either.
I've had mechanical gauges without isolators without any problems for years. With a decent gauge and braided line you shouldn't have any issues. I also installed a Needlevalve at the CP3 with the line hooked to the valve so that i can turn the fuel to the gauge off in case. Napa part # WH6820
