Yes, it can. I was using this as my sole source for a SPA gauge before I upgraded my lines, works fine, but you really don't know what the VP44 is seeing with this set up. I have a mechanical gauge in this position now, and see about a . 5 to 1 psi drop going from pre to post filter. My fuel filter has about 4000 miles on it right now.
Depending on what type of gauge/sender you use, you will probably have to remove the Schrader valve from the test port before you install your coupler. Not a big deal, just pick up a tire valve removal tool from a local hardware, etc. store, remove the plastic cap from the test port and unscrew the valve.
