Hi all,

I just installed my F. P. guage which I recieved from geno's garage(Great service by the way). And found 9psi at idle :{ that's bad, I guess I need a new transfer pump. How hard is it to change.

Anything above 8psi during any driving conditions is acceptable.



To change the LP, you will need an 18mm wrench, 10 and 13mm deep socket.



1. Unhook the wireharness from the liftpump (bottom right side of the engine compartment, just below the fuel filter housing.



2. Disconnect the fuel lines. There is one in the back, requiring an 18mm wrench. Loosen the banjo bolt and pull it out, be careful because there are two washers in there which you will need so don't drop the bolt.



2. Disconnect the fuel send line off the pump, again similar to the line on the back of the pump.



3. Remove the bolt that holds the fuel line on that goes back to the tank (back right corner on top of the pump).



4. Remove the 3 nuts that hold the lift pump to the mounting bracket on the top of the pump.



To reinstall, do the exact same but in reverse. Once you get the hang of it, it should only take about 15min and is a very easy change. Just do not loose any of the washers, they cost around $1 to replace per washer.

Also, check your local Cummins truck parts counter. I believe the last time I bought them, I paid around $105/unit (I bought more than one and I know the parts guys).
 
Seems like nobody recommended relocating the pump. The LP's get tired because they pull the full all of their factory located lives. If you move the pump to the frame just in front of the tank then the pump will be pushing for the rest of it's longgger life. Pumps like to push rather than pull, don't they? Anyhow, I've got mine relocated and I'm not the only one to do so.

9 psi at idle isn't so bad. It takes about 5 psi to allow full advance & anything over a pound will keep the pump cool enough to avoid damage. You might want to change your filter.
 
Same problem

I just went through the same problem. I just installed my new gauges from Genos 2 weeks ago ( awesome service). Fuel pressure was 8 psi idle and 0 psi WOT. I installed a new transfer pump from Napa. Pressures went to 14psi idle to 6 psi for a few days and then the new pump went to 0 psi at WOT. I installed another pump under warranty and the pressures are 14psi idle and 8 psi WOT. After 3 weeks with my westach fuel pressure sender went bad. Sender was dropping to O psi when it was actually reading 8 psi. I comfirmed my pressures with a diagnostic mechanical gauge I have. Make sure you double check your pressures with a mechanical gauge. Genos has the best customer service I have ever seen. My new sender is on the way, free of charge. By the way, Napa fuel pumps are same pumps as the dealer at half the price. Next project is a pusher pump setup.
 
Hey MSalvatore, you can try Jim Flynn's on Rt 31 in Glen Gardner. That's where I get my filters. They deal with Cummins parts. I've never had to get a pump there but might be worth a try. 908-537-6446. Ask for Steve.
