How many of you have a fuel pressure gauge on a 3rd Gen.

I was thinking of putting one on. If they are not necessary then I won't. I thought about getting the Westach to match my boost/egt gauge. I was thinking of just getting one of their universal mounts and mounting it next to my combo gauge in the SRT pillar. I want to keep my grab handle.

My truck will stay fairly stock except for adding a Smarty in a couple months, should I get the 16 PSI or the 30 PSI gauge.

How hard is the install? Where is the Banjo bolt you can supposedly tie into?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

A fuel pressure gauge is a good idea on any 1998. 5-up Turbo Diesel because their electric lift pumps can fail without warning, and especially if you have added power, the stock lift pump may not provide adequate pressure and volume. Most gauges come with instructions. Otherwise, tap into a line or banjo bolt just before the high pressure CP3 pump (Third Generation Rams) or VP44 injection pump (1998. 5-2002 24-valve engines). Both the VP44 and the CP3 have small pumps so they can "mask" the fuel starvation problem, leaving you with premature failure of the CP3 or VP44 and reduced power while still working.

I just put one on my '06. I also have the 2-micron GDP fuel filter. With this added filter, I show 7 psi fuel pressure at idle, and about 5 at WOT. I'm still trying to find time to install the Walbro GDP kit, but I think it runs at about 18 - 22 psi. If you keep it stock, the lower pressure gauge will give better resolution... if you're ever going to add an upgraded lift pump, better get a 0-30 gauge.

I've been reading that the stock in tank pumps will support more power than the filter housing mounted ones. I won't be running anything more than the TST R49, no injectors, stacking, smarty etc. ENafziger you are/were running the TST and EZ with the stock pump? I will get all the GDP stuff sometime, just trying to prioritize.

I've had one on my '03 after discovering lift pump woes can still leave you stranded. Kinda odd how my wife's 2005 Jeep Liberty limited 4x4 CRD doesn't need one nor does the GM/DuraMax's. I guess the injector pump can't get enough fuel volume sucked thru a dead lift pump.

Get the 30 psi gauge----you'll never know when you want to add an auxillary pump down the road.

If your running a tst you need a pusher.

Yes, running the stock pump with TST and EZ. Now that I've got gauges and can watch things, my clutch is shot, and so I can't really turn TST up past 1/1 without smoking the clutch. The truck felt strong before the clutch gave up, but I suspect fuel pressure was lower than desirable. However, I never heard the rail "pop" indicating I pulled the rail dry, even on WOT throttle runs up a mile long hill. I'm sure the GDP walbro will offer some benefit (after I get the Southbend DD installed anyway :) )

I put one on at the same time as my Walbro and GDP 2 micron set up. Fuel pressure is 21 lbs at idle and drops to about 20 at WOT. Besides letting you know that you are getting adequate fuel to the CP3, you can also tell when your fuel filter needs changing. When I get down to 12-15 lbs pressure, I'll change out filter. I've only got about 5K on the set up and the pressure hasn't dropped yet.

My gauge runs between 7. 5 and 9. 5 psi when crusing and will pull down to 5 psi when i put my foot in it. I have the GDP 2 micron fuel filter kit with the big hose kit installed on mine.
