Noticed my Carter pusher pump was cycling in a strange way, I could hear it running then it would go to a high pitched hum within 30 seconds, then back to the regular noise. Decided to check the fuel pressure with Briarhoppers guage. It read about 6 psi, then would drop down to three with the cycling of the pusher pump, put a new 4600 hp pump on and still not getting good pressure readings, about the same or less. Engine stumbles when I nail the accelerator. I am wondering if I need to put a new 4601 hp lift pump on? Would a bad lift pump restrict the pressure that much? I used to have about 18-22 psi. I hope I am not causing any damage to the VP44. Any ideas where I should start checking?

YES

been there done that. If not for the pusher, truck would have been dead in the water. With light throttle I was still able to get around till L/P arrived.

To check lift pump unplug it and watch fuel pressure. If no pressure change then L/P has gone toes up.

I am assuming that you would have a fuel pressure gauge set up before this or are you talking about putting on on temp?

The in-cab guage only goes to 15 and I was running 18 to 20 so I had to disconnect it and use Briarhoppers guage until I get a 0-30 fuel pressure guage. I tried to limp the truck around today but it started to stumble when I needed to build up some acceleration, so I decided to park it and wait for the new lift pump. I hope that solves the problem. If not I will be stumped.
