this morning on my way to work I had noticed that my fuel preswsure guage was pegged at ZERO, I pulled off to the side of the road and shut the truck off and turned it back on, guage still on ZERO The truck seemed to be running fine, the guage was working just last night , Had 15lbs at idel and around 11 cruising down the highway. I have no ther means of transportation at the moment and my local diesel shop is closed for the week and wont be open till monday. I drove the truck the rest of the way to work and then back home approx 35 miles still seems to run fine?? still have smoke coming out the exhaust. If I really dont have any fuel pressure would my truck still be running?

The guage is a autometer electrical unit that is approx 9 months old.

Could it be just the guage? would the truck throw a code if the lift pump or injection pump went out? Am I gonna be ok driving it or do i need to bum a ride for a few days? The truck is still under waranty until January.

any help is greatly appreiacted, I CANT afford to have my truck crap out on me right now.

The truck will run without the lift pump running if you don't have any air leaks in the system, not a good situation but it happens. If something goes wrong in the injection pump you should get a code but I don't believe you will with the lift pump. As you already know, you need to find out if the lift pump has quit before you do damage to the injection pump. You could open the drain on the filter with the truck running and see if you get a good flow of fuel but if it's not working, you may shut the truck down and not be able to restart. If you have a valve in the line going to your fuel gage, shut it off and install a small gage like a fuel pump test gage for a gasser in the line and see if you have pressure. bg

Acquire a mechanical gage and check yours. If no PSI take to dealer and have them "warranty" replace the thing since you're close to the end might as well take advantage - if you have a dealer you trust. As far as driving for a little while that's a judgement call - you'd more than likely be OK if you just take it easy and stay off the go pedal. Check your pressure to be sure though.

Well i went to the diesel shop monday and the guy i know check my fuel pressure with a mechanical guage I have 17 lbs pressure, he checked my guage for ground and power both were good, called autometer tech line they said to sent in the sending unit more than likely went out, so now I am waiting to hear back from the guy as soon as he heres somthing from autometer, at least I know i have fuel pressure and can keep driving the truck

Great News! Do you have a vibration isolator between the engine and the sender? Most folks use a grease gun hose connected to the psi port and then run it to a remote (body) mounting spot for the sender. This keeps the vibating Cummins from shaking the living **** out of the sender unit.

Wow! Do we have some kind of fowl word detector on the site? I just typed the word p_ ss and **** apeared in my last reply? If so thats great and sorry for using the wrong reference.

yeppers, you got "censored" :D

Sometimes you can fool it by using alternate characters, but that could pi$$ off the the hard working moderators and management :-laf

Sorry TDR mgt,I just couldn't resist :--)

Glad to hear your pressure is up there. I don't mean to pirate the thread but...

I thought the sending unit for the gauge should be mounted to the engine so they can vibrate together?
