Update on the Mallory Fuel pump

Not open for further replies.
Finished installation of my fuel pressure guage. Right now I'm just reading inlet port pressure. The numbers:

10 psi at startup and idle.
7-8 psi on cruise or steady foot on pedal
4-5 psi when hammering the throttle, but quickly comes back to 7-8 psi.

I'm waiting for the sender for the outlet port to come in. It would seem that my lift pump is operating within specs after 49K. Now, at least I should see a problem coming.

Rich, on my 1999, fuel pressure at idle is 13 psi. Cruising done the road at 70-75 pressure is 12 psi. Pedal to the floor on a hill is 9. 5 psi.

This is with stage ones and a VA. Did you drill out your banjo fittings?

My engine and fuel system are stock. I am running the SW gauge and sender. I have been seeing around 13 psi at idle and around 12 crusing down the road. If I get on it a little it will drop to around 11. The SW gauge and sender seem very slow to respond and only respond to changes of 1 or 2 psi. If I had the extra $$$ I would like to try out the Autometer setup.

Hey Guys,,, Bringing his back up 2 the top, and adding some of my own Comments here...

Sunday I Installed my A-Pillar Pod w/3 Gauges

1. Fuel Pressure (0-15psi)
2. Boost (0-35psi)
3. EGT (0-1600F*)

Today I hooked up all my gauges, and my findings were rather surprising. .

My EGT's are very Cool, VERY Hard to get the EGT over 600. (Even Lugging)

Boost won't get over about 16-17Lbs.

and The MOST Surprising,, Fuel pressure.
I had my Lift Pump replaced not even 100 Miles ago.
My Electronic Sender is screwed into, what looks like a bleeder screw, The one farthest away from the engine.

At Key-On or Priming, I get about 2-3 Pounds
When I start the engine I get about 0-0. 5 (zero to half)Pound of pressure. ANY Throttle and the gauge Pegs out on Zero.

If I downshift to about 2,500+ RPM it comes up to about 1 PSI.
<HR SIZE=3>
Do I have a Bad pump straight from DC ?
<HR SIZE=1>
or Do I have my Sensor in the wrong place ?, I have tried both Bleeder Screw Holes.
<HR SIZE=3>
Also, One More thing,, When me and My Dad would open the bleeder screws,, The truck would INSTANTLY loose prime, we had to use a funnel to pour diesel fuel into one of the bleeder ports.

So Far, other than Gauges the Truck is Completely Stock.

ANY Help will Be greatly appreciated.

Merrick N. Cummings Jr.

P. S. I would like to thank all the guys who have contributed to Research and Development for this Lift Pump problem on our Dodge trucks.

I didn't drill out the fittings. I'm going to look into getting the replacements from Mopar-muscle. My truck is completely stock. As I understand it those numbers are within specs for my truck.

Bomber--what guages are you using? all your readings sound low, except for maybe the boost--you installed the fuel pressure guage on top of the filter/heater housing right? If you did then I'd say either your guage is no good or your lift pump is toast. AS for the EGT's where did you install the thermocouple-pre turbo or post turbo-if it's pre I'd say your guage is off & if it's post then I still think something is not right---are you able to calibrate your guages?... ... chris

bomber , something sounds wrong to me , the gauge port to the rear on your filter housing is directly from the pump output , the one torwards the radiator is post filter sounds like (hopefully) your gauge is not working correctly , i have the factory test gauge , dealer can't question what i see as i have the gauge the manual tells you to use . also that boost readings is lo , but to get full boost you need to get on it , sounds like you are stock , you will be needing to be going well above the speed limit to see max boost . as csutton asked , where is your egt mounted ?

Just came back to NM from CA two weeks ago. INstalled S&W fule pres. gauge in CA. Reads 14-15 at most of trip, 13 when pulling up Flagstaff at 18PSI turbo.

Guess mine is OK. What a relief

Okay, Here are some facts about my truck.
<HR SIZE=3>
EGT & Fuel Pressure Gauges are Electric.
Boost is Mechanical.
All Three are Auto-Meter 2-1/16th" Gauges.
<HR SIZE=1>
I took my Intake manifold off, Drilled and Tapped it for the Boost Sensor.
The Boost Pick-up Line is on the back-side of where the Oil Dipstick mount is.
<HR SIZE=3>
My EGT Gauge is mounted pre-Turbo.

<HR SIZE=2>
My Fuel Pressure Gauge Seems to be working properly, as far as I can tell, With the fuel pump not running the gauge reads Perfectly Zero.
It is installed on top of the Fuel Filter/heater housing
<HR SIZE=1>
EGT Gauge seems to be close also. . After truck sits for about a day, the gauge seems to read close to the Ambient Temperature.
<HR SIZE=1>

The Fuel pressure sender is screwed Post Filter.

Thanks,
Merrick N. Jr.

P. S. I took the truck into My Local Dodge Dealer to have them look at the Lift Pump one more time. . This time with My Gauges installed. The diesel machanic said he'd call me in the morning.

Where can I find more information on the S&W gauges? I was looking at VDO gauges, but all the "Fuel" gauges go from 0 to 100. Which is way way more than I need. #ad

I did just order an a-pillar mount and a VDO boost gauge. Still trying to find a nice pressure gauge.
