It is my understanding that the VP 44 does bypass un-needed fuel back to the tank. Am I wrong and if not , why do you need to regulate at all?

I do mine for the lp to keep the check valve closed and to prevent lp cavitation and still provide the VP with 12 psi. I set it at 12 psi.

Regulator w/ By-pass: $110

VP44: $950+ (avg. $1200)

Stock VP is designed for 15psi inlet with 3-8psi returned to the tank. Sending 18-22psi+ (15 stock + 7 from an auxillary pump is common) and expecting the VP to sustain it's designed performance is risky in my opinion.

I am not an expert by any stretch, but I believe that regulated fuel flow will maintain a steady pressure, which is friendly to the VP as well.

R-N-R -- where did you obtain the Regulator?? I note in your signature that Custom Fuel Delivery was mentioned can't find any information.

I purchased the regulator from Summit Racing.

This is the basic setup, a bit unconventional with the double 15psi pumps.

Here is more info on the bits and pieces, including the regulator. I purchased a kit from Opoole and augmented it with a shutoff, by-pass, and regulator. The setup uses -6AN from between the tank and the frame pusher all the way to the VP.

Hope this helps,

Bill

I lost my VP44 on a trip to IN (53k total).

My regulator (Mallory 4307M) was in SERIES with the lp (like the diagram in the post above). NOT a good idea I think in retrospect. It MIGHT have restricted the volume to the VP eventhough it was set at 12psi pressure.

The RASP regulator does not require all fuel to go THROUGH it, but bypasses excess fuel to the tank. A MUCH better idea.

Dealer mechanic that replaced the VP basically emphasized that the VP needs all the fuel it can take plus any fuel it will ever take 12 - 14 psi.

Be careful with where you put your fuel pressure regulator. I had mine in series and think I could have caused the failure.

Volume and pressure are different.
