Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel Pressure test

Need to check fuel pressure on my truck.

2001. 5-stock. No observable problems-just going out of state and have previously heard of fuel pump/and or lift pump problems happening without truck owner aware of it until it totally shuts down. Current mileage-

32,000. Just need info such as pressure at idle, etc. And how to check as in connections to, location etc. Or any other necessary information.

And while I'm asking: going north to Salt Lake City from New Mexico-- Should I add a fuel additive due to the change in cold weather temperature?

Or leave as is a use #1 fuel over there? Thanks.

For the fuel pressure gauge for inside the cab, I got my setup at Geno's Garage for my '02. They're top rate, and will advise you. I will not run without the gauge! I can send you pics of my installation if you want. I have always used STANADYNE Performance Formula additive. http://www.stanadyne.com/new/ppt/showfile.asp?id=1295. You want to see at least 10 psi at the injector pump. The banjo bolt has a Schreder valve for a test port. You can screw a test guage on to it for a quick check before your trip. Geno's kit uses an 18" hose here but you must fabricate your own bracket to mount the sending unit. #1 diesel isn't recommended unless it's extreemly cold.

lost mine at 19,000

My 02 lost the lift pump @ 19,000 mi, I got rid of the stock junk, got an air dog. now I have peace of mind..... IMO

there is a schraeder valve on the front of injection pump unscrew cap and screw on fuel pressure gauge you can buy these at any auto parts store but they are pricey also you would need to add on to the hose so you could hold the guage in cab while driving to test under load. If you have time before you leave go to a supply house like grainger and pickup a liquid filled gauge about 7' of diesel rated fuel hose and the schraeder valve you can pickup at a refrigeration shop and make your own diagnostic testing set up. Since you do own a second gen vp44 equipped truck you should have a fuel pressure gauge installed in your truck and at least a pyro stock lift pumps will drop of without notice

Took my truck in today due to 5psi. Dodge says we should have 7 pump pressure w\engine cranking. Pressure w\engine running should be 10psi. They ordered me a new pump under waranty. I will have to pay the $100. 00 since i have 56000milse on my truck. Hope this info helps.

Unless your truck is more than 5 years old, you shouldn't have to pay anything - it is covered under the 5yr/100,000 mile warranty. You may want to clear this up with the dealer before they replace the pump.
