I know there has been a great deal of give and take on the subject of fuel pressure. My brother-in-law with a '01 just had his lift pump replaced, but as Paul Harvey says, now for the rest of the story.
page two!
He was experiencing some stumbling on acceleration while on a trip from Tampa to Pittsburg. When he got here, we decided that maybe it was a fuel delivery problem and took it to the local dealer to change the filter as I don't have any facilities to do the work and besides, I live in a townhouse where the neighbors frown on much vehicle work etc. They measured the pressure before changing the filter and it was 9 in and 1 out. Sounded like a clogged filter. After the filter change, static pressure was good but engine still wouldn't run. They then measured the lift pump flow and found it way low. So, a new lift pump. Pressures and flow then looked good, but truck still wouldn't get out of it's own way. Called Star. A couple more test and they concluded the injection pump had failed. After the injection pump was replaced, it ran great and even gets a better fuel economy.
Now for the point of this story.
I am going to put the three gage dash pod on my new 04. 5 and guess I am looking for a little hand holding on my choices. I plan on EGT, (post turbo), transmission temp, (outlet to cooler), and now, fuel pressure. Will the lift pump output pressure, actually filter outlet, give me sufficient warning of a clogged filter or failing lift pump such that I have time to schedule the service? What change in pressure drop is expected under normal conditions?
As always, this forum is the greatest and thanks for your thoughts!
