Attention: TDR Forum Junkies For quite a while have had problems with engine cutting out or hic-uping between 2& 3000 RPM under throttle. Decided to change filter again to see if bad fuel or clogged filter. Neither. Put new filter in anyway & filled filter with fuel. Changed oil and air filter same time. Engine would not start. Took plugs out to bleed but no fuel was pumping but could feel the pump running.
I took fuel line off from pump to filter, still no fuel. Talked to service tech at my dealer, concluded bad fuel pump (48500 miles).
Flat bed tow truck took it to dealer. Unloaded it. It started right up and ran for 15 minutes until they shut it off. Did fuel pressure test - no pressure. Put in new pump, now runs better than it has in at least a year, and engine is much quieter. While my truck was in, another customer had his in for servicing. They changed the filter and it did the identical thing. Needless to say, they knew what was wrong and replaced his pump.
It seems that the pump did not have enough power to re-prime the fuel system after changing the filter. Sloshing around on the tow truck must have moved fuel down the line to the pump allowing it to deliver just enough to run. Last filter change was in Feb. or March this year. Fuel mileage had gone down also. Hopefully it will be back where it should be.
WARRANTY question: The computer charged me $50 for my deductable thinking it was only covered under my extended warranty. The service writer went to bat for me, and found the documentation stating that this is a heavy duty truck and is covered under Cummins warranty so did not have to pay. No arguments involved. This is a good dealer - a 5 star at that. I bought my second truck from them last month.
However, he said that the fuel pump is covered only for 50k miles under the original warranty. Next time, if before my extended is up, have to pay $50. In the 1998 Warranty Info book the following is stated:
p. 12 B. Parts Covered for 5 years/100k miles - emission warranty - fuel injection system
p. 13 B. All other parts on Cummins engine - Fuel injection pump and injectors
Now, the gray paragraphs start at 2. 7, p. 13 for California Emission Warranty - I am in Texas, then on p 16, a Non-gray paragraph - B. - says parts covered for 7 years, 70,000 miles, fuel pump-electric, among other things such as the turbocharger. QUESTION? Is this paragraph referencing only California cars - Every other time California is mentioned, it is in a gray paragraph. They do not qualify the paragraph B. by stating where it applys.
On page 18 - says COVERAGE - LONG TERM EMISSION-RELATED PARTS:
catalyst, cylinder head, egr, FUEL PUMP, TURBOCHARGER
BIG QUESTION: Do I have 100k no deductable warranty on fuel pump? Do I have 5 years or 7 years?
