OK guys, the truck's been running great for a long time, so I haven't posted much, but now I need some advice/help.

I was towing our fifth-wheel a week ago, and it started sputtering and mildy bucking.

I pulled over, checked everything over, all seemed ok so I pulled back out.

First second and third gear were fine, then when in fourth, it started doing the same thing.

It kept getting worse and worse until it died and wouldn't start back up.

Got a tow home... changed the fuel filter, it ran fine for a handful of miles, then started hesitating and bucking again.

Everytime I cranked it it took way longer than normal.

When I floor it, it pulls like normal for a second, then feels like it's defueling or something, it still accelerates, but falls flat on its face.

I've changed two more fuel filters, it still acts the same... hard start, loss of power etc.

Does this sound like fuel pump? injectors? or?...

Thanks!

Before you start replacing stuff, measure the fuel pressure after the fuel filter. If it's low and since you've replaced the fuel filter, you can assume either a malfunctioning lift pump or a fuel line restriction... to include a clogged fuel trainer inlet screen.

Good luck,

John L.

Thanks guys... if it the pump, what's a better way to go?

Truck has stock turbo and injectors.

Also... know of any good diesel repair shops in Southern Cali?

Thanks!

Update... I checked the codes with my Smarty and I'm getting a Low voltage at the lift pump code...

If I decide to go stock pump until I can get a better setup, is it easy to change... and where is it located?

I did my own gauges, airbox, exhaust etc. just never messed with the fuel system.

All help is greatly appreciated, I need to be on the road ASAP!

Thanks!!!

Your options are:

1- Stock pump from Geno's. This will take you about 15 minutes to change and is really easy, even for a beginner. Not a bad choice if you will stay stock or close to it. Downside is it will go out every 75K miles or so.

2- Dealer will replace with a factory in-tank unit. If you are not under warranty, this will be at least as spendy as an aftermarket pump. The jury may still be out on the long term durability of this pump.

3- After market pump. Everyone has their favorite here and you should ask around for other opinions. One relatively easy one to install (plan on 2-3 hours) is the Raptor RP100. I’ve seen it priced at one TDR supported vendor for $309. I have a different after market pump that was harder to install. A buddy of mine has this one and seems to work well for his mildly modified truck.

Good luck and please let us know how you make out.

Thanks for all of the help and advice guys!

I installed an AirDog today, hopefully that solves the problems.

Got it from Glacier Diesel... phenomenal customer service, above and beyond the call of duty... Thanks Rich and Toby!!!

... btw, unless you've done this type of thing before, AirDogs instructions are horrible.

Thank God I printed out theirs, and FASS's and cross-referenced :)
