Hey guys, Im coming from the 2nd Gen side to ask a question. One of my buddies recently had his '04 3rd Gen die on him. Stealership told him it was the fuel pump, he didnt ask if it was the lift pump or the injection pump. Has anyone else had this problem? Im trying to convince my dad to buy a 3rd Gen, and now he's having second thoughts. (Mainly because my '02 had the lift pump problem) Grateful for any help.

The lift pumps and injection pumps on 3rd generations are totaly differant then 2nd generations. There have been some injection pump leaks and lift pump failures. Most of the lift pump failures have been in Canada. Some in the lower states but very few. Fuel issues and cold is being discussed. The 05s the LIFT pump is NOW in the fuel tank. No post about it as of yet. But in general its not been a big issue.

From what I have been able to glean from the posts about it, once the lift pump goes, the injection pump can't pull fuel from the tank like the 2nd Gen's can. All things considered, I love my 3rd Gen and wouldn't hesitate to get another one. In fact, if I had the money, I would have another one.

My lift pump went out on me at 198,500 mi. , and I drove it with 0 fuel pressure for 1377 mi. before it quit on me, and 421 of those miles was towing a 35' 5th wheel. She rolled over 200K on the 24th of Dec. , and hasn't missed a lick!!! I'm real HAPPY!! :D

Once the lift pump goes out on a 2nd generation and prime lost due to filter change etc. They didn't RUN eaither. Serviced many a fuel filter on them and that was IT. Dead in the bay. Others towed in same reason other then filter serviced at home or in a quick lube.

I can't say much, but there is an UPDATED lift pump in the works for 98 thru 2004. 5 trucks. 3rd gens will be first and 2nd gens after, sometime later this year, spring to summer respectively... ... ... . 05 is not an issue with In tank pump... ... read between the lines.....

Lawdog,

If I'm reading between the lines correctly, could it be that all the wiring is already there for the intank pump? If the design of he tank wasn't changed on the 05's the new pump would drop right in. I haven't played around with the wiring yet to confirm this myself, due the wet weather, but will be soon. It would sure make a nice and easy retrofit.
