Jumped into the truck yesterday to load up the camper for a trip this weekend, and noticed the idle fuel pressure was only 8 psi

Took it for a ride around the block, and driving pressure is 3-4 psi, WOT is zero.

Called one local stealer for warranty replacement, and he said they'd have to check it out, and THEN order a replacement pump. :-{} WTF?

Called another stealer, and he said yep, got them in stock, but can't get me in until Monday.

So much for that weekend trip.....

I shoulda run it, croaked the VP-44, then brought it back to the first stealer to replace it all. :p

Thanks WyoJim, but the filter has only 1500 miles on it... truck has 18,700 on it.

The fuel pressure gauge is tapped in ahead of the filter, specifically to monitor that crummy lift pump.

Can't believe these 5 star dealers that don't have any of these lift pumps in stock, since they fail pretty regularly.

Do yourself a favor and go to the local Cummins dealer and buy a liftpump to have as a spare. That way trips would not have to be cancelled and when you got back you just put the old one back on and take here in to the stealer at YOUR convenience. And if you are out in the booneys and it goes out you wouldn't have to walk to the stealer. It is well worth the $140 bucks.

Thanks Chipstien, that's a good idea.

I already carry spare fuel filters and the tools to change them under the back seat, so what's a few more tools and a spare lift pump?

Sheese--pretty soon the whole rear of the Quad cab will be filled with tools and spare parts just to keep this WONDERFULLY ENGINEERED DC truck running!

I love this Cummins, it's just too bad it's wrapped in a POS DODGE. :(

Guess I need some cheese to go with the whine...

roadranger,

I really hate to defend Dodge and even worse blame Cummins, but I read on this forum awhile back that the lift pump choice was actually made by Cummins not Dodge. Don't know if that is a fact but what I read here seemed credible.

Did not know it, but I drove mine with a "dead" lift pump, could of been for 2000 miles. Got a FP gauge and the dealer installed a new LP. That was over 3000 miles ago and the VP44 has not been, and never was a problem. You might want to run your truck for a little while with the bad LP just to make sure you have a good VP44 while your still under warranty ;) . You know how they trained us in the USMC. Separate the men from the boys. Figure if it worked for us, it should be good enough for the VP44 :D Semper Fi

Just drive it with the bad lift pump. If it is a restriction in the system that is bad, but just really weak is not gonna hurt a thing. A few hundred miles without a lift pump is not a big deal unless the VP is weak to begin with. MHO, mine will not get parked for a bad lift pump.

You have some company roadranger, mine is a POS too. The dodge part is anyway.

My Dodge is not a POS. You young pups don't know what a POS is. I bought a Lincoln Continental MK5 off the show room floor in 1979. Now there was a POS!!! And the Cadillac before it was worse!!!

My Dodge truck has the best paint of any vehicle I have ever had. The workmanship is the best. Every thing fits and every thing works and it hasn't broke down in 70,000 miles, and its an Automatic.

Its the best vehicle I ever owned and the '93 Cummins was the best one until this one.

I don't know why every one that gets a fart cross ways finds their way onto TDR.

Pardon me for Ranting, but I am to uncomfortably full of prime rib to be reading all this POS BS.

WyoJim: I'm with you Bud! Bought mine in 94 and couldn't imagine a better truck. It is kind of funny because when I bought it at $30,000 I waited and waited for buyers remorse to kick in and I'm still waiting.

Michael

I'm with you WyoJim, I get so tired of hearing this POS BS!!! I pulled 300K with a 96, and it was a V10, was still a damn good trk. , I have 185K on my oo CTD, and its a damn good trk. I tow with Powerjokes and Durapads all the time, and I'll stick with the DODGE!!!

Larry

Jim, you wanna compare service tickets for your caddy and my Dodge? Mine has been in the shop a ton, and many thousands of dollars in repairs. 21 trips to the dealer in 75K miles qualify for POS in your book? If not I am sorry for offending you with a $38K truck that will not stay together.

I don't know, but see'n and read'n all the probs. these trucks seem to have, It doesn't suprise me that so many folks are upset with the quality. Mine hasn't been in the shop yet, but the reads here have me a bit concerned, especially when the warranty is done. This truck is deffinately the lightest duty 3/4 ton I've ever owned. That much I can see myself, just by way of comparason. Don't think I'll buy another one.

THancock, does Peterbuilt make a 3/4 ton that I don't know about. I'm curious who makes a 3/4 ton truck that is heavier duty (ie. haul more weight) than the Dodge. Surely isn't Dorf or Cheby. MHO:)

I don't know what problem I have but here are the recent symptoms:

Check engine light on and a P 1693 code.

transmission at 1/8 throttle shifts back and forth between 1st and 2nd.

Truck lost power once going from a stop sign to 40 mph and would not go faster.

Truck lost power at 65mph on freeway and would not accellerate. A minute later everyting seemed normal.

Could this be a lift pump problem?

Any ideas?,

thanks Bob

1693 is a MAP sensor prob. What mods do you have? Try unplugging the MAP sensor and plugging it back in. If you have any dialectric grease then apply plenty to the plug and sensor. If you have a fueling box then check your connections. The power loss is probably caused by this sensor or the truck is going into limp mode. Good luck!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the 3/4 ton Dodge is the strongest 3/4 ton out there. We have a Dana 60 in the front where as the Fords only have a Dana 50 for both the 3/4 and 1 ton with the SRW. The Dana 70 is bigger than the Ford 10. 25. I think Ford does have a stronger T-case but The HD 241 should be more than enough. There's no point in even comparing to the Chevy. The Dodge has its problems just like Ford and Chevy have their own problems. I'm planning on keeping mine for a long time!

Banks

Chipstien, Do you have a pic of your Banks exhaust on your truck? I would like to see one if you have it! I was thinking of that brand but would have to see what it looks like on a truck first. :)
