We're about to make a 3000+ mile trip and just wanted to get some input on diesel fuel quality across ND and MT. I updated my truck with improved filtration, primarily due to prevention and a couple of bad experiences with water laced biodiesel from BP (MN & IL). Kwik Trip (premium) and Cenex (Roadmaster) seem to have worked very well going through IA, MN, & SD, but just not familiar with MT stations. The SD stations I was at did not have biodiesel which was fine. Will likely go Bismarck, Minot then highway 2 to Glacier and south past Missoula - Billings on I94 for the return. Thanks.

You will find good an bad in equal parts, just like other states. High volume newer stations are the best bet. All the fuel is the same quality as delivered, it is how it is handled and stored that makes the difference. The quality of fuel in cold months is much better in the northern states for sure. Summer time it is the same crappy ULSD everywhere you go.

I was out there a couple of years ago and had no issues the Centex stations on I94.

I try to avoid BP stations where ever they are most of their fuel is B20 and my 08 doesn't not like it. I fill up at Meijer staton in Oswego or at most of the Meijer stations in MI.. I will then use Wal Mart (Murphy Oil) in other areas that Wal Mart is in. I also use the Next Exit to find fuel stations on the interstates and try to use high volume truck stops. They seem to have decent fuel.

Good luck on your trip west.

Jim

Thanks for the input. I started with Shell (which their pumps indicate is not a Shell product here in IL), then focused on Kwik Trip or Kwik Star and Cenex for the rest of the trip, worked out well.

Just finished a trip from San Francisco to Omaha to Mpls through North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and back to NV and home. No problems with any stations. Shell, Flying J, etc. Got home 2 weeks ago. Total miles 5,100. Avg mpg 13.6. Combined weight 18,000.
