Does any one know of a test kit or where I could send a sample of my fuel to find out the quality and the cetane factor? thanx

Any if not all Heavy equipment repair facilities will ... ... For instance here in Newington, CT (far from you unfortunately) there is a company called HO Penn Machinery which repairs Cat equipment ..... They have on site Lab Analysis for oil,transmission,antifreeze,fuel,final drives,etc,etc..... They charge a nominal fee of 15 bucks for the kit and analysis ... . This is who I use, check for a Caterpillar dealer repair shop in your area is one way to proceed ... .

Most states require the cetane be at least 40 but few suppliers post it becuse it changes all the time. Good bet is that your cetane is always 40 - 45

Thanx for the link . I had read it before and could not remember where I seen it. That is one reason for my question. I have contacted cummins and they as well as dodge dont recommend the use of additives except in sever cold. I have used schaffers and power service but have quit due to warranty concerns. What's a guy to do?

I would use an additive just to make sure the VP44 is getting all of the lube it needs. There is no way using one of the major vendors DFA's would affect your warranty coverage. Different diesel fuel suppliers put different additives in the fuel so there is no control over these additives. JMHO

Cetane

The Cetane levels are running around 44-46 right now in our #2 fuels. If you have a refinery, or terminal nearby you could take a sample to them for analyses, they will usually do it for you as long as you will sign a custody transfer release on the sample. We do not do Cetane level testing at our terminal, but will do flash, gravity, haze, and can ship to bigger lab for cetane level. We get our cetane level specs from the refinery on their shipment into pipeline.
