My truck effectively died last week and threw the P0192 code. Thanks to TDR, I found out it means "Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Low". The symptoms were what many described - an old school diesel sound (loud, old Chevy diesel), intermittent gasping and shuddering, not starting etc. Not sure if it was a direct result of an "engine shampoo" that the auto detailer did the day before (that I didn't ask for) or perhaps it had something to do with my Quad X2. But I've had the X2 for a few years, so probably not. And perhaps the engine shampoo timing was coincidental.
So I searched the TDR forums and many people pointed to the fuel rail pressure sensor (Cummins Part # 3949988). I pulled the Quad X2 off, as I had a similar problem with the X2 when it was poorly connected - didn't help (I talked to Quadzilla and they were very helpful). I plugged the X2 back in and got really funny, cycling readings on the rail pressure then it read "----" with the ignition on but engine not running. I pulled the harness off the FRPS and tried starting it. I threw a P0193 code "Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor High", in addition to the original code. Then I talked to Geno's and the tech guy there was also very helpful (he said he'd lend me a demo FRPS, if I lived near Geno's - which I don't). I managed to convince a buddy to let me try his FRPS and problem solved.
This is where it gets interesting. I called NAPA and they couldn't source the part. So I called the local dodge dealer - $970 - wow. I knew there was a price discrepancy between Dodge and Cummins (thanks to TDR) so I called Cummins Canada - $318. Here's a summary of all the prices I sourced (I live in Canada)...
Local Chrysler $970 CDN
Not so Local Chrysler $1070 CDN
Cummins Canada $318 CDN
Washington State Chrysler $744 US
Genos Garage $229 US
Cummins USA $218 US
So, very long story short, TDR helped me start the diagnosis, Genos and Quad where great to deal with, as were both Cummins USA and Canada. Dodge dealers, hmmm...
Why the huge mark up? The parts guy at un-named Washington State dealer said he could get the part from Portland, and coincidentally, that is where the Cummins warehouse is in the northwest. So they buy it for $218 (or probably less) then stick it to their customer? The local Dodge dealer had five FRPS's in stock. Five! Apparently a common (rail) problem and rather profitable.
I know there are a lot of Dodge and former Dodge people on this forum that help out a lot with our problems, and thank you very, very much. I hope I haven't stepped too hard on your toes and of course, i'm not blaming you. But a 3 to 4 times markup on this part by the Mother Company who has built us such terrific trucks, is really hard to swallow. If it wasn't for the power of information, brought to us by the internet and forums like this, we'd be much poorer, in many ways.
Thank you and keep up the good work TDR and all its members.
BTW, I belong to a boat forum, sponsored by Chaparral Boats. They don't allow any discussion about prices of any kind. Their moderator deletes all references to prices for parts, used boats, servicing, etc. Do you think they have something to hide?
