Is it normal for me to see some fuel residue at the 19mm nuts where the fuel lines connect to the head and fuel delivery tubes?
There is no raw fuel there, but it is a different color and grime is sticking to it.
I plan to check the torque on the 19mm nuts as soon as I get a chance. I guess I should use the simple green on it and then see if it comes back very soon.

Good thinking. Clean it up real good, and make sure everything is properly torqued. I spray and wipe down every oil change. I havent seen anything like this yet. Maybe I will let it get good and grimey... naaaaaa. I'll just keep wipen and swipen.

It sounds as if you have a loose 19 mm injector line nut. The torque on the nut is what keeps the end of the injector line tight to one end of the fuel supply tube which in turn keeps the other end of the fuel supply tube tight to the injector body.

We (NW BOMBers) typically leave the 19 mm nuts at cylinders #1, #3 and #4 loose when bleeding the fuel system after an injector change.

Remember to torque the 19 mm nuts to 28 lb. ft. (revised torque spec. per TSB).

sounds to me like its oil film being spread by your fan from the lovely and mostly useless blow by bottle/tube , my engine compartment is regularly covered in crap from it .

hopefully i'll get enough effort together soon to move it . i'd look at that , if this is the case there will be a sludgy film on the backside of the fan .

John raises a good point... Is it fuel or oil residue? I have seen valve cover gaskets leak, and it looks as if the injector lines could be leaking. My suggestion would be to clean everything up and blow it dry with compressed air. Then just keep a close eye on it, and see if you can find out where the leak is coming from. If it is the injector line, be sure to take the connection apart and clean up the surfaces that butt together. We had a truck in the shop about 2 weeks ago that had a slighty fouled up butt surface. It caused a fuel leak, and hard starrting.

Thanks for all the replies. I cleaned the engine with simple green (that stuff really works) and the residue hasn't come back yet.
I am starting to think it was a oil residue.
I will keep watching to see what happens.
I lengthened the blow by tube a long time ago and it now blows out on the road!
