Are the early '98 12V's affected by the bad fuel return line? I am trying to diagnose "why" my truck is so cold blooded even in moderate temperatures even after sitting in the garage overnight.

Symptoms:

Fires right up, but does not want to idle without throttle being applied for about the first 15-20 seconds, then wants to kill unless allowed to warm up for at least a minute or two.

When starting, throttle must be applied about a 1/4 pedal and feathered to get truck to start.

Truck runs great and starts right up when warm. Just a small nuisance I am trying to get to the bottom of. I have turned my AFC star wheel up, towards the engine some, could this be the problem?

Thanks - Terry

ALL of the 12 valves are subject to bad fuel hoses. However, your problem sounds like the idle speed is too low. Should be at least 750 RPM in gear with the AC on.

Think Joe is right. Mine was fine until I had the dealer turn the idle down.

Eric

PS Terry, check my profile, could we be related?:D

that is the same exact d@mn problem i have been having with my 98, i have started to learn to live with it , it seems like it may jsut be the nature of the beast.

Eric - Related:eek: Truck brothers:D

We DO have the best of the best in our 12V '98 model year - IMHO (don't flame me, I'm not trying to start a war). Have you done your fuel return line?

As far as the idle on the AT trucks... I have heard that our aftermarket TC (DTT in my case) is so tight (a good thing) that they do have a tendency to drag down the idle.

Yes, I did my fuel return line last year. It's a lot shorter than most people were saying. A foot is plenty, with some leftover.

Helps a lot to remove the fuel filter housing, plan it with a fuel filter change.

I did mine from the top. Took about an hour for the whole thing, filter and all.

Is this the line that goes bad ? I thought I read that it was easy to change with the starter removed. What size fuel line ?

Maybe I ought to do the filter and starter contacts at the same time . The stock batterys are still in this truck doing fine , but I imagine these take out the contacts when they get weak.

Maybe I'll do Red Tops, fuel Lines , contacts and filter at the same time. I don't remember having to do all this on my gas trucks.

These diesels are a sickness aren't they?

PS Just remembered the sound insulating also.
