I have a 97 with an automatic transmission. I want to change the fuel return line before it becomes a problem, but I am having difficulty finding it. I someone could tell me how to locate the return line or tell me where in past issues it describes where it is I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

There is a banjo fitting on the side of the injection pump that is toward the engine. It is near the front. Follow the steel line from that fitting to the hose. It is behind the fuel filter and goes to the steel line that goes to the tank.

While you are at it you should also replace the supply line. It is in the same general area.

You can get a kit with the proper marine grade diesel hose from LarryB's Dodge starting problems solved here. .

I replaced mine a couple years ago after it started leaking. I had bought Larry's kit along with his starter contact kit. Replaced the return line on my early '98 [used only about 8" of the supplied line, he gives you about 2'] and at same time pulled starter and replaced contacts.

Replacing the line is basically done by working by feel. Not something I'd want to do again although now I know just where to look/feel.

Look at changing both fuel supply and fuel return lines, they will both have to eventually be changed. The fuel lines are routed from the fuel tank up the left frame rail, past the transmission, then up towards the fuel filter which is on the left side and towards the back. There are two sizes. Changing the lines under the hood is not that bad, but you have to get up close and personal. Take out any interference that suits you.

Also, check the fuels lines that are on the fuel tank. They also deteriorate and leak. I changed mine under the hood but neglected the fuel tank and now have a problem.
