I am repairing my fuel sender in the fuel tank. I have found that the 2 slots on the pickup housing are worn keeping it from sliding smoothly up and down. Can I tighten the 3 screws with the float just off the bottom of the tank so that it does'nt slide any more? Or do I need to buy a new housing? Why does it need to slide?

The slide is so that the housing can be used for multiple applications. When I changed my sending unit, my slides were completely worn out. I just drilled everything to 1/4" and used all stainless hardware. I have not had any problems since. I have heard somewhere that there is a newer housing available from a Liberty or something that will drop in, but do more research.

Good Luck

It's been 7 years since I repaired my fuel sending unit so my memory is vague. I don't remember anything about 2 slots. I used a small SS bolt with a jam nut on the float pivot point. I do remember that I had to be careful with the small plastic rheostat. Cost me 2 hours, nothing more. Pssss, raise the bed.

The slide feature comes in handy when you hit the bottom of the fuel tank. With the old solid style you hit the tank while off roading or whatever and the pick-up is no longer near the bottom of the tank. I used to drop a lot of ramchargers with plastic tanks to rebend the pick-up/sending unit

thanks for the info guys. I think the slots are for different depth fuel tanks. My loose screws were supposed to be tightened at the proper depth for my tank.
