First of all, thanks to all of the guys that posted help on how to remove my truck bed. I put a new sending unit in my '01 and it went off without a hitch.

Now, the problem is with my friend's '99. His gas guage would just be pegged on full all of the time. We put a new sending unit in it and it still does the same thing. The gauge stays on full all of the time, even when the key is turned off. The gauge on my '01 goes to empty with the key off and then returns when the key is on. His gauge doesn't even move when it's turned off. I removed the panel cover and can physically move the guage to empty but as soon as the key is turned on or turned off the needle goes back to full. Does this indicate a gauge problem or is it normal for that year?

I've tried to check the wiring at the plug on the sending unit as best as I can and I'm sure that the float isn't stuck. Has anyone had this problem or know what else to try? I'm wondering if it's a guage problem or sending unit problem.

I had a somewhat similar experiance with my 98 1/2 early 24 valve. The fuel modul was a two piece, the upper being metal and and the bottom plastic. As the fuel level changes the bottom unit slides up and down. The screws in the plastic bottom wears the upper metal slide area and then the slide locks up and won't slide properly and hangs up. After replacing the sender unit and trying to smooth out the metal slide area it still failed in a short time. I finally bit the bullet and ordered the new replacement. It is all plastic and slides in slots and there are no screws to wear the upper unit. The new unit is 4897668-AF Modul Kit. Be sure to take your first born as the list in July 2004 was $500. 00. You may have a electrical connection problem but check the tank unit for wear. Be sure to align the arrow on at top of modul between the two marks stamped into the tank (approximately 2 o'clock position). Good luck in finding the problem.

Have you done a dash recalibration? I think you do it by holding in the odo reset button, and turning on the ignition. then let go once it starts scrolling numbers. it should peg all gauges and mebe give you an error if one is messin up. .

Other than that, its possible your sender wire could be shorted to 12v somewhere causing the incorrect reading. Ive never seen this before, just throwin some stuff out there. .

good luck

It had that same problem on the sliding part damar. I'd read on some other posts where guys were just using teflon washers and tightnening the bottom part down so it doesn't at all. So, that's what I did on his. As long as the float and sender works properly though I don't see where that would make any difference?

I'm going to try that dash reset, thanks guys. Anything else to try would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think this problem is the sending unit. Might be, but it appears to be an open circuit to the gauge from the sending unit. The voltage to the gauge is something like four volts at empty and almost zero at full. An open causes the gauge to hit the peg. Might be a dirty connector somewhere or a bad ground. It's time to get a meter out and do some voltage and continuity checking.
