Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) fuel shot off solenoid

well i have a 94 12v and it was sitting for a while. went out to crank it and it turned over fine but no fire. i replaced the fuel shutoff solenoid and the relay and still nothing. i turned the key on and its not pulling the lever up on the solenoid but i can manually do it. any idea what i should check next. im trying to sell the truck and i dont want to put a cable on it.

Does the shutdown solenoid stay up when you pick it up manually with the switch on? If it does, the hold in coil is OK and your problem is no voltage to the pickup coil.



Check the fusible link. It is a blue 16 gauge wire from the battery on the driver's side that provides pickup power to the solenoid. If it is not burned, the connection may be bad at the battery. If it is burned you need to find out why. Usually caused by starter contacts sticking.



Be aware that there are two relays involved. One is the engine starter relay in the distribution center. It supplies voltage for both the starter solenoid and the fuel shutdown relay. It is apparently OK since the starter is working.

The other is the fuel shutdown relay located on the engine firewall.

Is this the one you replaced?

yes when i pick up on the lever on the solenoid it stays up. so i will check that blue wire and post later. thanks allot i really appreciate it. and yes the relay i replaced was the 2 on the fire wall.

Did you determine if the solenoid that you removed is bad?

If it is, something caused it and I would suspect the starter contacts.

If they have never been replaced, now would be a good time. They wear down over time and eventually stick together causing the fuel solenoid pickup coil to remain energized. It is not designed for continuous duty so it will fail. It is possible that the fuslible link burned first and the solenoid is OK but not likely.

what i found out was that when i removed the battery and few weeks ago the wire came off. so when i put it back on it worked. thanks for all the help. and if your wondering the wire was not burned through.
