Hey guys, how do I remove the fuel shut down solenoid? and where is the relay? I'm still very mecanically illiterate but I'm learning. I'm going to try to clean the solenoid then check it's operation and the relay. I had the hard start problem and I did the hose changes already. Thanks for the help. ( I posted this same topic on the non drivetrain/engine section too... on accident sorry bout that )... ... .....

You'll want to check the relay first, it is usually the problem. The relay is located on the firewall, it is part of a two relay system. I replaces the relay and my problem disappeared. Good luck.

had a problem with my truck not cranking half of the time and traced it down to the relay for the fuel shut down solenoid, picked one up at Radio Shack for $6. 00, dont remember the part# but it was in the automotive section, 30 amp relay, not as heavy looking as the original but I have had mine in for about a month and now problems yet. and for 6 bucks its an easy answer if you think your relay is bad.

I had the same kind of starting problem a couple of weeks ago. It turns out the only thing wrong with mine was the connections on the relay plug, as the only thing I done was to remove the plug, spray the connections with cleaner, and it has been working every time since.

Here is how you can check it out to see if the relay is working. Turn the key to the run position, then go to the start solonoid and lift up on the bottom of the solonoid lever. This solonoid is located at the rear of the injection pump, just below the (AFC) Air Fuel Control. The lever should stay up, and the truck would then start if you hit the start position on the key. If the lever does not stay up, then you have a different problem associated with the solonoid. The relay for this is located on the fire wall, on the drivers side, just below the rubber seal for the hood. There are two of them mounted on one bolt. The start relay is the one nearest to the drivers side.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the guidance guys, I'm going to check the relays first and see what comes up. So far, if my truck doesn't want to start, which is very unpredictable, it can act up any time then be just fine for days, I leave the key in the on position then go under the hood and manually lift the solenoid, then she fires up fine. Does this info lead more to faulty relay or sticky solenoid? I'll report back on what I find with the relay. Thanks alot for the help.

I had the same problem with mine, it would be fine for awhile then may give me a couple days of problems, it eventually got worst. I could also manually lift the solenoid and it would crank, from what I understand if you starter is operating properly its not the contacts, thats the way mine was and the relay solved the problem, the relay is from what I see a pretty generic piece, I found one in my garage that I pulled off a driving light wiring harness and it was the same as the one I bought at Radio Shack.

I had the same problem and had to replace both the solenoid and relay. I got the relay from Mopar for $40, I figure if one Mopar relay went bad on the truck, how long is that $6 Radio Shack one going to last?

The killer was the solenoid, $265 for the upgraded one. Swap relays first and make sure, in my case both were bad. Make sure you adjust the solenoid properly if that ends up being the problem, I've heard if they aren't adjusted properly they'll burn out again in no time.

Well good news, I finished changing the fuel shut off solenoid relay and it seems to have been the culprit this time. Now my truck starts like a champ again! Thanks for all the assistance members!!!!!:)
