in order to start my truck i have to push the spring underneath the solenoid up to where it locks. this is with the key in the on position. the spring under the solenoid wont lock by itself. what should i do to trouble shoot this problem? new solenoid or can i fix this one?

Relay failing is more common than the solenoid going bad. Relay is screwed to firewall between engine and brake master cylinder.

I would pull the solenoid and clean it up before I bought a new one cause they do corroded, get dirty, and check connections. Always good to have the relay on hand so get an extra one.

The solenoid is a little pricey I would use a jumper, good sized, from batt. to solenoid and test the lift side first. And yes, clean it too.

In my case, I cleaned the solenoid a couple of years ago and all was well. Then as I said, a couple of months ago, I had more issues. This time, the solenoid came apart. The threaded rod separated from the plunger. Sometimes it would work correctly and other times it would not. Then it was completely done and needed replacement.

You'd think by now that somebody'd be marketing a retrofit for a manual push/pull, like an old-fashioned choke cable.

Go to your friendly Navistar dealer and purchase the whole kit, or find a wrecking yard that deals with medium size trucks and remove one for your self. you may have to modify it some to make it work. The cable will be stronger than the choke cable, and a better handle.

cool! did some internationals use bosch pumps like ours, too?

The ones I drove were late 80's and early to mid 90's. My company did not do any extra wear items when they bought trucks/tractors so they were pretty much manual type set up for shut down. And yes they used the Bosh Pumps. If you can find a throttle cable/power take off cable it would work also. Now these were not the kind that you plowed the field with, medium duty power units for pulling frieght trailers for delivery.

JMRinehart, Pull the connector to the fuel shutoff soleoind, have someone turn the key to "start" position using test light, voltmeter, multi meter see if you get any power to the solenoid connecter( there are three wires one is a ground, one is for the pull up coil, the other is for the hold up coil.

If no power then the fuel shutoff relay is bad or is not getting power, if it is not getting power there is a bue wire coming off battery that has a fusible link in it that mite need repairing.

If it is getting power then the solenoid is bad.
