starting having problem with intermittent power loss the last couple of months then yesterday it did it again so I stopped, left the truck running and checked the fuel shutdown solenoid and the @%$!! thing basically fell apart in my hand :--) the rubber boot is all to pieces! Is there anyway to rebuild these things or am I destined to buy another? And if I have to buy another where is the cheapest place to get one? Thanks, Chris.....

Exactly what happened to me. Bad feeling when those parst just fall out huh. . Theres a shop in New Orleans that I tried to talk into buying just the rubber boots. Thats all that was wrong with mine. I'll see if he has them yet.

well I fixed it for now, the small rod at the end that actually goes up inside with a small spring and clip into the big main shaft and spring had came out, but after putting those two pieces together and using the thumb out of a leather work glove and a zip tie  for a new boot everything seems to be working (who knows for how long). but if you do find out about replacement boots let me know. Thanks, Chris... ...

I would love to get a hold on a new boot also.

Mine is in bad shape and I have been trying to figure out how to replace the boot.

Rubber Boot

I got a new rubber boot 8 months ago from a Bosch shop in Beemer, NE. I think it was something like Midwest Diesel. If they had it, I'd try your local Bosch approved diesel shop.

I know your pain. I bought my pick-up and two weeks latter it wouldn't start up. Shut off solenoid. DOH!

$300 plus later I whished I'd a thought to look at that BEFORE I bought it:mad: oh well. By the way there is a shutdown solenoid on E-Bay right now. E-Bay Motors Item # 1808645085. Looks to be the right one. Or at least the updated one.

Pumperdude,

Please follow up on this thing. I had mine off over the weekend and the boot has a hole and is cracking all over. Time for a replacement.

The local Bosch shop said it's a Dodge part. The local Stealer said you have to buy the whole solenoid. $400 :--)

Keep us posted, or we'll have to get real inventive.

Thanks,

-Jay

If you have to buy a whole new solenoid, I believe you purchase it from either Cummins or a Bosch shop for considerablly less than the stealers $400 asking price. Do a search, it has been discussed before along with prices from Cummins.

1tuffram,

The local Bosch shop wouldn't touch it. Said it was a Dodge thing.

I haven't talked to the Cummins place yet. Either way, it's nuts to buy the whole thing for a rubber boot that shouldn't cost more than a quick lunch.

RHARVEY,

Locate your AFC housing on the pump. Look down along side the pump below the housing. The solenoid is a round 'can' about 2" in diameter and maybe 3 to 4 inches long, mounted vertically. 2 of the screws that hold it on also bolt down the AFC housing. The boot sticks out the bottom of this. You can feel it much easier than you can see it. Use a mirror and light to see it.

solenoid and boot

Talked to a local diesel shop to day about solenoid and boot. They have to get it from Cummins. They said there have been a number of part changes on the solenoid. Part # for my '95 was 3800723 for the solenoid@$277. 63. Didn't get part # for boot but the price is $28. 89! Syncro is the manufacturer. One on e-bay brought something like $128. 00. Could have been an old style. Any way you look at it they are spendy. Boot must be avaiable somewhere. Looks a little like a boot off of John Deere planter! Suppose it has to take a certain amount of heat! I don't think I need one yet but have had experience with solenoid on 3208 Cat diesel. Good luck guys! JPS

When mine burned up, I had to go to the local stealer. The improved version cost more. Outwardly, the only difference is the round coil housing is larger and the bracket is different. The boot is the same. Being larger in diameter, mine rubbed the brake master cylinder. I ended up unbolting the whole thing from the firewall and putting two washers under the right side bolts to cant it off to the left. Then I had to adjust the brake light switch.

Boot number

JPS,

Call them back and get the part number! $28, eh? OK, it's an expensive quick lunch :( Still better than buyin' a whole new solenoid.
