Fuel Shutoff soleniod??

Can someone give me some info so I can help my friend. He has a '93 2500 2wd Automatic, a couple of months ago it got so the engine would not shut down when you turned the key off, also it would die sparatically. At that point I told him it was probably the fuel shutoff soleniod. But he called the local Dodge dealer who has a dedicated diesel tech, and the dude told him that when the soleniod goes bad the engine usually won't start. So he rigged up a pull wire to the shut off arm on the pump, and has been killing it manually for the last couple of months. But today, you guessed it, now it won't start. It spins over fast enough, and sometimes it acts like it's going to start but won't.

We have determined that there is a good 12v (when the key is on) to the round thingy toward the back of the pump with two wires attached to the top of it, so it would seem that the relay is not bad. Is this the solenoid or are we even in the right spot? It looks like a real booger to get out if it is (about an inch round thing that appears to screw in). If someone could point me to a diagram that I could download would be extra helpful. I don't usually read up about these trucks because mine is a '99, or I would probably already know where to find the answer.

Also, I did a search and the only thing that came up was for a '97 and it made mention of being able to raise the solenoid manually and see if the truck runs. But I don't see how you could do anything like that with this, I'm starting to think I might be looking in entirely the wrong spot.

Easy way to test for a bad solenoid/no start is to remove the plunger from the solenoid and try starting . If it works you have found the problem. A no shutdown is usually traceable to metal shavings holding the solenoid open, allowing fuel into the pump. Bad news is usually the shavings are from the injector pump going bad.
 
Yep, you're in the right spot. That is the solenoid. I never had to remove mine, but it does look tight back there! I understand there is also a poppet and spring in there too, so be careful. It's likely that the sol. went bad if you do have 12V at that lug.

I think I remember hearing that it's 24MM and a thinwall socket will do the trick. Maybe do a search here for more info.
 
Hi, Just pull wires off, bend male wire connectors down and unscrew solenoid but be careful as there is a plunger and spring inside that can fall out. 15/16"? wrench will work but taking throttle linkage off makes it easier. Take spring and plunger out and use a small magnet to check for metal shavings in fuel pump. Put back together without spring and plunger.



My guess is either small chunk of rubber off plunger bottom or metal shaving from pump has plugged plunger. Don't need parts with manual shut off.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you guys, I'm busier than a one armed wall paper hanger. Any how you guys were right on track, removed the solenoid, after removing the throttle linkage brackets. Threw the plunger away, removed some fairly large metal shavings with a magnet. Put it all back together and it starts great, still using the homemade kill pull wire but, hey he's happy because it's fixed and it cost him $0. 00.

Dodge Dealer has a Dedicated diesel tech????? Should be dedicated Coffee & Dounut Tech Don't you think. ;) :D
