Hi folks:

Can anyone tell me where or how the fuel off shut works on a 1st gen. Cummins? It show ain't like my 96. I got a freind that is totally lost and has had some bad advice. He's using ether on it now. I really need to help him.

Thanks.

Am not sure of just what your problem is. From what I gather using ether on these thing is a major error! i. e. intake heater disintegation! I'll take a stab at this as I had an issue with this on mine. It is a solenoid on top at the rear of the pump. It has a single wire to it that is + 12V. To access it I removed the bracket that holds the throttle/auto trans shift cable/cruise control cable. It is a simple plunger that when energized allows fuel to flow to the pump. When deenergized i. e. ignition shutoff it closes and shuts off fuel flow. Mine just up and decided to fail in the closed position and therefore quit and would not start either. I was in panic mode when this occurred. I called the local Cummins shop ( Cummins West San Leandro CA. ) and was fortunate enough to have willing tech advise me to take the thing out and remove the plunger. Then reinstall ( without plunger). Then it ran but required manual shutoff by opening hood and shutting down manually via the manual shutoff lever. This worked wonderfully however it got old opening the hood to shut down. At the time the new solenoids were ridiculously expensive from some sources or backordered at the reasonable sources. I then created and installed a manual shutdown cable with stuff I had that leads to where the E brake and hood cables are. Still using it now. Does this help at all?

NoMOFo.

Thats it. Thanks. I saw it but am totaly lost with the 1st gen trucks and didn't know what I was looking at. I'll give that a shot.

Thanks again.
