Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) fuel smell

this past week or so I have had a smell of diesel that wasn't there before and seems to be getting less mpg. just started traveling on the freeway for my commute to work and when there i can smell it 15 minutes it is gone. checked the lines from frame at tank to head no leaks. (STUMPED) any suggestions? tia

How about the lift pump? I had a one that developed a leak within a few hundred miles after it was put on. The lines apepared to be dry, but the pump was obviously the issue when I did a closer inspection of it.

Ill check it looked dry but it could be because i was driving and then checked. thanks
