Fuel Solenoid or Relay?

Ok just priced out a new solenoid. Ouch. The relay is in the realm of affordable.

Pretty sure my truck has a fuel shut off prob. When it's cold in the am, it will usually start. But once it warms up, the only way to get it started after stopping for fuel/coffee/etc. is to pop the hood, put a finger under the solenoid (w/the key on) and push the solenoid rod back up into the solenoid... ruum... starts right up. Without the little push on the solenoid arm the truck won't start to save it's life.

The truck shuts down w/the key every time w/o failure. Which seems to show the wiring to the relay is ok.

Any thoughts out there to help me diagnose this prob before I blow the huge$ on a new solenoid?

Thanks for the help fellas,

Eric

That is what my truck did and I was told just to go to radio shack and get a 12v 30 amp relay. I think it was like 5 bucks and it fixed mine.

The relay is only involved with pull up. Hold is directly from the ignition on circuit. So turning it off does not show anything about the relay. The linkage may be sticking a little so a few shots with spay lube might help. It is most likely the relay. The 30 amp relay from Radio Shack will fix it, but the pull up draws quite a bit so that relay will get tired after a while. A 70 amp relay is better. One of those is about $7.

Thanks to everyone for weighing in...

I guess it should have been obvious to go for the cheaper part first then work out from there.

Should get it done in the next week or so. Will keep you posted.

Cheers,

Eric
