first time posting. have read many posts on this item. spent several days troubleshooting truck for low power. finally found solenoid was not going full stroke because the boot was thrashed. have new one on order from larry B's.

am now concerned about the relay as a precaution. some have indicated they cleaned the contacts on the relay. my question is how do you get the relay out of the housing. i removed the bracket that holds both relays but it looks like there are tabs that retain the relay in the housing. would it be better to use the radio shack relay or the heavy duty relay that larry B has? any info would be appreciated.

The Radio Shack relay is not strong enough and will not last long. The Larry B relay is the way to go for a replacement.

I agree with haveing an extra relay. I bought a LB relay when I replaced my solenoid last year.

It is important to set the adjustable plunger correctly or the holding portion of the solenoid will not activate.

I work in SSF if you need any assistance installing the new one.

Method to open relay

Use a thin blade screwdriver to pry the side out and then slide a feeler guage down the side to trip the plastic catch. Do this on all four sides of relay and then pull on one of the spades with a pair of pliers, should come right out.

You can clean the contacts, but they will never be like new again. This is a temperary fix at best. I cleaned mine two different times before giving up and ordering a 70 amp one from LarryB.
