My friends 94 wouldn't start... tow truck driver put the key to on & lifted fuel solenoid plunger up... . Truck started and ran fine... However this process must be repeated everytime. . As he lives 3000 miles away, and is mechanical challenged. . ( Right now he is working on changing the batteries in his volt/ohm meter) Is their anything other than the solenoid that could cause this problem... ... thanks norm

This is usually caused by a bad relay. It's the bigger of the two on the fire wall between the master cylinder and the engine. You can use a Radio Shack 30 amp auto relay. It's about $6. Cummins may have a 30 amp relay also for less than $4. If that's not it then check the blue wire from the positive post of the driver's side battery. It's a fusable link and corrodes sometimes.

Sounds like a good plan, I just sent my friend an email explaining what a fusable link is... . Oo. I may have to shotgun trouble shoot this problem because of the distance... . A $6 relay might be the best place to start... thanks norm

hmmm, i guess i'm cheap, ... i just shaved the contacts with my knive and it hasn't cause a problem since. Just pull the relay out and then pull the cover off the relay

If the plunger stays up with the key on, then it's your relay.

Mine did this to me just a week ago (Since Christmas). Posted it on the 911 forum and Joe G. got me running in less than an hour - first sign of problem to fixed and running. Simple 30 amp relay.

Cummins repair shop Part number NV 2012557C1 30amp Relay $3. 03.

Radio Shack 275-226 is same thing.

Like and idiot I rushed out and bought a new solenoid :{ (at cost however:D ) Then got home to find the relay fix in my issue 38.

Took apart the relay the next day and filed the contacts and I'm still driving on it!Oo.

P. S. Don't even pay by check @ a stealer if there is the SLIGHTEST chance you'll have to return the part. The hassel and wait aren't worth it!

Yeah just be glad you dont have to replace that darn solenoid, as my luck has it that was my problem not the relay, but tell your friend to change it, its very very simple and he'll be on his way. ;)

thanks for the input. . I'm not sure my friend will tackle cleaning the contacts but a relay replacement should be right up his alley... norm

Ben...

You stated "If the plunger stays up with the key on, then it's your relay. "

Sorry, not true - it can also be the fusable link from the battery - the "pull" wire gets it's power from there, the maintenance pull is from a different source.

I know since my problem was the fusable link, but I could make the solenoid stay up w/the key on.

Now of course this is for my 96, but why would they change in a different year - but they might of...

Yeah just check to see if your getting power to the relay you know its then the relay. ;)

I have seen a starter solenoid stick on and burn up the "pull in" side of the fuel solenoid while the "hold in" side was fine.

You can disconnect the solenoid and jump to the pull in wire to test
