Looking for info on how the fuel system is laid out in order to get a better understanding how a pre & post filter fuel gauge will work. Is the order of the components, lift pump, filter then injection pump? Or is it something different? Reason is, I want to be able to monitor the lift pump with my pre filter gauge and the filter with the post filter gauge. If the filter is after the VP44 where would I connect the pre filter sender? If the filter is between the two pumps I know the connections can be made right at the filter.

My '01 was delivered 10/00, but how can I tell if it is a 2001. 5? I know that the '01 came out very early on '00.

Just getting started at this...

Thanx in advance,

JKostera:

You are right the fuel system layout goes lift pump, fuel filter, vp44. You can connect prefilter at the schrader valve on the lift pump which is right by the firewall down low on the drivers side of the engine just work backwards from the filter cannister if you cant find it. . Geno's sells a tapped banjo bolt to replace the schrader valve or you can remove the stem inside the schrader and find the right fitting to attach to the schrader and hook your line to it. Post filter there is a banjo fitting on the bottom of the filter cannister and there again one of Geno's tapped fittings works great. Per the service manual it allows for a 5 psi drop across the filter which seems like alot of drop to me. IMO the most important pressure reading is post filter because that is what the vp44 is seeing and with a clean filter you should be able to get a baseline and only need one sensor although both would be more informative. DC has a spec for post lift pump pressures, when I called my local dealer they said 10psi at idle post filter and 11 psi pre filter which is somewhat different than what I have heard here.

As far as 01 vs 01. 5 I believe one tell tale sign is rear disc brakes.

I am sure someone else will chime in with more info.
