Fuel system overhaul..

Spring fever topic:

This spring when the truck comes out of storage, I am going to pull the fuel tank, and clean it. Last fall when I changed the fuel filter, there was a bunch of sand in the old filter... .

So I am thinking that it would be wise to replace the lift pump as well? Also I remember reading some thing about the return line can swell and cause a fuel restriction. Any one have suggestions as to what else needs to be inspected when the fuel tank is out.

I have been thinking about sediment in my tank lately and wondered if anyone else had encountered this before. I carry several 5 gal cans with me when I'm on my road trips and see some nasty stuff in them.



On a similar note, am I the only one that has problems topping off? When the nozzle kicks off, I can add about 3 more gallons. But it takes longer for those 3 than for the rest of the tank. Is my vent line clogged?



Also, does anyone make an aftermarket replacement tank for us with increased capacity?

Yep. Everyone should carry a five gallon can and look at what is in the stuff. Make a believer out of you. There are just some places I don't buy fuel. My son manages the ambulances at the city hospital and they have Internationals. He has had multiple problems with bad fuel but is required to buy from a certain place that has the contract. I think there may be a fat rat in there some where.



The vent may be clogged but I have a favorite place where the truck leans to the off side and fuel scoots in right to the brim. Flat and level I can get a good bit more in after the first cutoff. The manual suggest that you not stuff the tank. I don't know why.



What is the weather up your way Phil? I have a trip to Bristow scheduled. I will be on 95. What do you have of the 3:07. Is it out of the truck? How far are you from 95?

Phil, Mine acts the same. I think it's the foaming action of the fuel.

In the summer I stop after the first click... I usually top off on the way home from work, and I use less than one gallon on the trip. . with the summer heat and fuel expansion (remember it's approx 55 deg as it comes out of the underground tank) I'll sometimes get a little dribble out the filler cap after I get home.

And if your worried about solid contaminates in the fuel, you can always install a Racor or similar filter ahead of your lift pump like the marine engines are set up.
