on my 04 diesel I am wondering if the injector pump is strong enuff to pull fuel from the filter housing? can i crank the line b4 the housing to see if the pump by the tank is working? truck will not start but filter housing does have fuel in it, no ther issue with the fuel, ie water, gelling etc.

From what I've read the injection pump can pull from the tank when the lift pump fails but that kills the inj. pump , so what is recomended is to put a fuel gauge in to catch the L. P. going bad to save the I. P. , if you crack the fuel line coming from the L. P. there should be pressure with at min. key in start pos. but also maybe in on Pos. for 10sec. hopefully your under warentee. from what I've read this can get upwards of 2 grand. and if there is no warentee then the best choise may be an after maket fuel system.

When my lift pump died it would slightly pump but would not preasurize. If you take out the filter and turn the key on, you can check where the filter would be and fuel should be pumping strongly if it was good.

This is not true of the CR equiped Cummins engines. The CR pump may be able to pull the fuel, but not a volume high enough to keep the engine running. In the 3rd Gen's usually when the LP fails the truck will just die. It is true of the VP44 pumped trucks in that they can pull fuel from the tank if the LP fails. I can't comment on earlier models.
