Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel Tank Fart

Now for all of you who have wondered, but like myself were too embarrased to ask, I am goign to go out on a limb for you. If when loosening your fuel cap, pressure is released, is this good, bad, or indifferent? I am sure that since this is such a simple question there is a simple answer.

Check the vent. Could be plgged. Had to blow mine out several weeks ago.

Whenever I pull up next to a gasser at the fill station, I always do my best to make loose plenty "fumes" from the Tank. .



It might not be polite, but I let "fumes" pass in Mixed Company.

BTW, Yah, Mine does it, but I can't seem to tell if it's a vacuum, or blow, all I can tell, it's just noise. Sometimes and SBD...

I noyiced on my 98. 5 that when i took the fuel cap off there was a vacumm. I checked the vent on top of the tank by the fuel pickup & there was a small red cap on the vent port. I pulled that off & now when i open the fuel tank there is no hissing sound. I think this cap has been on there since the truck was new. the bottom of the tank is also dented like the tank was being crushed by the vacuum from the lift pump. I had to replace the lift pump & vp44 also im sure the plugged vent had something to do with that. kurt.

My 99 has never pressurized the tank.

Yep, mine sucks also. The only time it "farts" is when its REALLY hot out and the truck has been sitting in the sun...

I believe there was a TSB about this. Some person along the assembly line was not doing their job. There is a vent hose on the top of the fuel tank. This person was to take off a red cap that was on the end of the hose, and they forgot. The fuel systems for our trucks are not pressurized. they should be neutral to the outside environment. The cap is ontop of the tank, you might have to lower the tank to access it. A simple fix.

Mine hasn't ever pressurized, that I can remember.

On mine, there is a small hose that is on top of the tank, next to the fuel pickup, that runs up near the fill tube. Mine had a small straight fitting on the end that was open to the air. The hose is maybe about a foot long.



Need to slip the hose off the tank end and blow air through the hose. You can't see the tank end of the hose, just have to feel around.
