Fuel Tank filling problem

Hi all, The last two times I have filled up I am not able to even get it in the first click. Fuel comes up the neck and kicks it off. Must be some thing with the filler neck. Any one eles run across this?

Take a look at your filler tube on behind the bed side and see if it was the victim of road debris.

The only times I have had issues has been a bad nozzle at the fuel station.

Adding a fuel tank vent mod. will also help your situation.

The vent mod would probably resolve filling problems. Diesel fuel foams, especially when warm, so some of your problems may be because of the heat wave you are experiencing in the central part of the country. Both my trucks have always taken a few dollars more after the nozzle kicked off the first time. Even worse when the temps are near 100s. Kind of a PIA but not worth doing the mod for me.

Newer nozzles are known for this. Any time I am on the road mine does this, but when I get back home and go to my favorite station I can usually get an extra 3 to 4 gal more.

check the hose between the filler cap and the tank for kinks.

The tanks also have a "roll-over valve" in them. A small plastic ball with a light weight spring behind it in a "cage" right where the fill up line comes into the tank. I just cleaned out my fuel tank on my cab and chassis and cut it out because of that same problem using the high volume pumps at truck stops. I assume all of the trucks have them. Tried to get the shop to take it out, they refused because of a liability issue, said if I wanted it out I could take it out myself. No problem, two minutes with a pair of side cutters and it was out. Can fill up much faster now.

Did the issues occur at the same pump? Is it a regular pump of yours?

It is for sure a combo of hot fuel foaming more, and possibly a sensative nozzle. I did the vent mod years back, and have never found a nozzle that shut off before I could see LIQUID fuel in the neck. One of the top mods on my truck that I have never regreted.

I looked at the hose, looked good on the outside, was wanting to pull it to check inside but now that I have time... . 104* too hot. It can wait till later.

I have been fueling the same place and the same pump. Just had a thought... I have been fuilling up in the evening, still hotter than blazes, I might try it AM see if that helps.

I don't know about 3rd gen but If you have 2 hoses connected to the filler neck make sure the small one doesn't have a low spot in it where fuel can get trapped. The small one is the vent and will cause the symptom you describe. If that is the case just lift the low spot so the fuel can drain back to the tank.

The vent mod involves removing the fuel tank and installing a bulkhead fitting and vent line that tees into the factory vent line. It allows the hump at the back of the tank to hold fuel instead of air. IIRC, the '06 already has a vent nipple there, but it may be a good idea to R&R the tank and extend the vent(s) so their not sitting in dirt.

UPDATE: I removed filler spout from bed and hoses. I took blow gun and blew into the vent hose... . you know the paper cap under the Howes jug cap... . yep it blew one out quickly. Reistalled pats run to town to fill it, it takes fuel again. Yep I had a brain fart... bet it dont happen again
