This is only the second time I have filled the fuel tank, and both times it has taken forever. I am wondering if it needs to be vented, or if there is a blocked vent, or is there something else wrong. It acts like a vapor lock, but I had not driven it very long or far, for I to be too hot.. Any thoughts? Oh yeah, I have a 2014 ram 3500 4×4 SRW.

There are 2 flaps used to close off the fuel fill. The upper one, that you can see, and another, that is a couple of inches below that. Be sure to push the fuel nozzle in far enough to fully open the lower flap. Other than that, try another station. I have found that some pumps run really slow, some really fast, and some just right.

Not sure what the "vapor lock" is that you mention. Vapor lock is usually associated with gas engines and happens in the engine compartment. Has nothing to do with fuel filling.

Forgive me for asking, but is this your first Diesel? Diesel definitely pumps slower than gasoline....unless you're using a truckstop pump.

I've had some issues trying to fill up. Some pumps will cut off and not allow even the slowest fill. This new system with out a cap does not vent very well. Wants to burp back on you. Forget using those large fill nozzles at the truck stops. They will fit but can't go slow enough to use.

I always use the 1st setting on the handle so it fills slowly thus giving less foam allowing to get a good full tank. I have done this on all the diesel trucks I have owned and the new ones with the double flaps in the filler tube you can add very little after it cuts off.*

No its not my first diesel, but if it takes 15 min. actually timed, to put in 20 gallons, then somethings wrong in Denmark.

Thanks, cause this makes the most sense, also the earlier post about pushing the nozzle further down to open the second vent.

Thanks land shark, this makes the most sense. I think the new filler opening with no cap is the problem, and pushing the nozzle down further did help let it go a little faster, but I could not get it to the first stop on the nozzle. So I guess I will just relax and chill out while filling the tank. The rest of the truck is so great, that this is just a minor inconvenience.

I've never had any issues filling up any where including truck stops. I can fill up using the second notch as long as I have the nozzle inserted completely as far as it will go. I think that might cause it to shut off a little quicker as it fills but I doubt I miss more than a quart though.

Have to say this is my one real gripe with my new to me 2013. After having a 2003 and always filling with the trucker pump at full bore, I'm still having issues getting the little pump to open both flaps enough to not pop off and stop filling quite often. I tried filling with a trucker pump once on the maiden voyage home from Texas where I purchased it, and holy mother of a mess, I paid 2 or 3 bucks for diesel that I'm pretty confident went all on the ground. Would not even start to take it even when squeezing the handle as little and gently as possible. Miss my old girl every time I fill up, lol. Not thrilled with the open to the elements flap either, especially being up north with our lovely winter roads and dirt roads. The lid does not seal enough to keep all that dirt and water out of there. Ordered the o-ringed cap from Geno's. Unfortunately noticed the green plastic ring around the top outside flap is cracked at the bottom edge, so not sure how effective the cap will be. Have to look into replacing that, but pretty sure will Crack again seeing as how that is where the weight of the pump nozzle rests if you let go of it. Oh well, still a huge upgrade in truck compared to the '03.

This under $3.00 cap works great for me. This picture was taken when I had my 2014 Eco Diesel. Works the same way on my 2017 2500. I have never had a problem of any kind when fueling up. Sure do not know what the answer is.

I have No problem getting past the 2nd flapper valve. My issue is the tank will burp back and cut off the fuel if the flow is too fast. I actually had the fuel burp up and come out all over me and the side of the truck. Fill it very slow and it's not an issue....

The 2017 Pacifica also has a cap-less fill. My wife called me up confused at her first fill up. Said there was no cap and the pump kept clicking. Told her it's the new thing, my truck is the same way just put the nozzle in all the way. She's used to it now. Knows the sweet spot for the nozzle.
