2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission fuel tank problem

awhile back i posted a question about a vacum condition in the fuel tank. i found some info about a small cap that may be on the vent outlet on top of the tank. i checked this and found no cap. i guess i will need to remove the vent from the tank to check further. has any one had this condition,how do you remove the vent from the tank. i did replace the fuel filler cap but that didnot help

I'm going to tackle this tomorrow. Supposedly the vent can be plugged one way or another. Ill let you know what I find tomorrow night.

There was a problem with some 99 models with the vent line being left with a red plastic cover on it (maybe other year models too, I don't know)If I remember correctly, if you look at the top of the fuel module from under the truck, the vent will be toward the front and pointed inward. The factory cap was red. bg

No, I didn't get around to it. My wife made plans for me. Its cold here know, so I will get to it later this week. I will still let you know what I find.

Mine did the same thing when I bought it. I checked for the red cap and it did not have it. I was going to drop the tank and put a new check valve but it looked like a lot more work than I wanted to get into right then. I bought another fuel cap as some folks have drilled a hole in them to cure the problem, but I still wasn't sold on that idea. Got to looking at the cap and discovered it will come apart. There are two little check disks in there and I figured out which one allowed air in under extreme vacuum. I removed that one and left the other which keeps fuel from running out if tank is overfull, truck rolls over etc. Figured that was a lot safer solution for the time being and I did not even have to get dirty! It works fine and will get me by until the fuel sender craps out at which time I will fix it proper. Hope this helps.

thanks mike. i will try your idea. i can relate to the frozen beer. i lived in augusta for 20 +years until my wife was transfered to nashville for work. i miss the snow,snowmobiling,and the great state of maine. i have and old friend in lee maine[larry cobb]we had horses and rode alot in bar harbor.
