QUESTION FOR THOSE IN THE KNOW ?

WHAT SIZE FUEL TANK SHOULD BE IN MY 97 1-TON

CLUB CAB ?

I recently ran my truck out of fuel (not good)

got the rig to the BP Fuel stop (the only place i buy fuel in town)and lo and behold the fuel tank only took 33gals to fill it up !

the dealer literature and my owners manual says that a 1 ton w/long bed should have a 37 gal tank ,the last issue of TDR says that all long bed trucks w/cummins have a 35 gal tank.

ANY HELP ON THIS WOULD BE APPRECIATED !

THANKS

My 97 owners manual pp. 130, 220 says 35 gallons. Either you didn't take time to fill it totally, or the last 2 gallons was not under the pickup when you needed it.

Replace it with the Transfer Flow 54 gallon tank and then you can safely use 35 gallons between fillups. :D

35 Gallons,

At least it did not take more than what it's supposed to:eek: . My mom had a 97 crew cab chubby with a 35 gallon tank and we put 37 gallons in it one day:confused: we new it was low but not that low, even had a horse trailer on it.

Hum, makes you wonder how they measure these things:rolleyes:

MMclain, my off-the-cuff guess is that you were screwed by the gas station pump. (Did it kiss you first?)

I put 34. 7 gallons in my '95 2500 once and sweat bullets that I had cut it so close.

Just be glad you don't have my dad's truck. We've run it otu of fuel at least 5 times and it's never taken over 31 gallons to fill it up. I dunno why, it's a 35 gallon tank. It just doesn't pick up the other 5 gallons I guess.

Nope I didn't get a kiss:eek:

Your more than likely right, those wonderfull Wal-Mart pumps:rolleyes:

CumminsAholic,

I think it's time to bomb the fuel gauge:D

Seems I remember reading here something about a vent cap. It was left on at the factory by mistake. The result was so much suction in the tank that some tanks actually collapsed. Mmmmm... . Maybe do a search to find the details.

Larry B is correct, there is a red vent cap on the tank module that needs to be removed. On my 97 it was on and my plastic tank colapsed to where I could only put in about 34 gallons. When ever I took off the screw in fuel cap to refuel, it would suck air indicating a vacuum in the tank. I removed the cap and installed an aftermarket 60 gallon tank.

Look on top of the tank just inside the frame rail... if it's on, you will see it.
