Fuel tank smoke

Does anyone else have lots of smoke coming out of their fuel tank after a long highway drive?? Every time I pull off the highway to fill up I pop the lid and it looks like its on fire. They even refused to fill it at one place today. I can only figure that the fuel is getting so hot that its vaporizing in the tank but I've never seen or heard of this before... . have you

Never seen what your talking about but I bet its vapor from the return system. Would take a LOT of heat to make diesel fuel smoke.

I agree it would have to be very hot to make the fuel start to vaporize..... but it has to be as it will continue to pour smoke out of the tank for the whole fill up and continue afterward I do cruise at about 85MPH but that should not heat the fuel up that much as it never has on any previous truck I've had. I am tempted to put a heat gun on the tank next fill up.

Anybody else had this happen to them?

Not sure if the Cummins Ram uses an in tank fuel pump, but I would sure find out! If there is one it could be overheating. I wouldn't want to be driving down the highway when the fuel ignited.

Did you feel of the fuel tank itself to see if the fuel was warm? I looked up the flashpoint for diesel fuel and it says >125 F.

That's really not all that warm to make it eager to ignite in the presence of a spark or flame. I would have thought the vapor recovery system should keep those smoke-like vapors out of the tank though. My truck has never smoked like that either, even after pulling hard on a hot day. I'd be nervous.

Diesels don't have any in tank pumps only the sending unit.
