Fuel tank vent kit

I finally got around to trying to install the vent kit (thank you Dave) but removal of one of the two hoses from the tank proved to be too frustrating. Is there a trick or a tool that facilitates removal of the quick connect fittings? The larger one came off easily but the smaller one, possibly due to the location of the tabs, consumed most of an afternoon and still never managed to get it off. I would prefer not to remove the driveline, bed , exhaust, etc. just to have better access to the fittings. Any advice would be appreciated.

I did find it rather difficult to apply the proper "Forward" pressure to the hose and work the coupling release at the same time. It did take me about 10 minutes to figure out that was the key to its' removal. It may help you to jack up your left rear, remove it and the fender liner if you have to get at the hose and coupling with both hands...

Too bad, you are having such a difficult time. I can assure you that the result is well worth the effort

Use a wire tie, thick string, or something that you can wrap around the fitting at the releases and squeeze together. I did read on one of the threads that there is a tool for it. You may want to do a search.



I used a wire tie. It is flat and I could use two fingers to pinch it together at the top, putting pressure on the releases, one of which I could not put pressure on directly with my fingers.



Good luck. The vent mod is definitely worth it.

I will definitely try again. I didn't remove the rear tire or the fender support the last time but did try a wire tie and wire. Both seemed too thick to get into the small gap between the end of the hose and plastic tabs.

I struggled with it too..... until I removed the tire, that was the key. I could then get at them from a better angle and popped them right off. Above suggestions are good.

Consider an early fuel filter change-out, even though you were careful.

All good suggestions guys. I haven't found a foolproof way to get that connector off yet, but if you struggle with it for a while it will come off. Although it's no help to you RMachida, the '05's have a different design that makes it a lot easier. Guess the mechanics got tired of messing with it too.

That middle fuel line (that goes on the barb with the yellow cap) is twisted just enough that the clip sits at a 45 degree angle and you have to get your finger down under the barb itself to release the one side of it. It's a pain.

Mine looks just like the first picture. I have almost a full tank now so I will have to wait until I run it down befor trying again. Thank you for all the responses.

It was in one of the many discussions about the vent mod. Maybe it was Ryan B. that mentioned it. You may want to ask him. It seems he (or whomever) had a SnapOn part number.

I just jacked on the trailer hitch about 4 inches took out

the fender well protector reached in pinched the little

clips at the ends. The one in the picture on the right came right off.

The other one seemed smaller and took about 4 trys, about 3 minutes.



I did have a little trouble removing the pump assemble from the hole.



I was going to take a picture for Spooled-up but I was so excited when I finally got it out I forgot. Sorry Dave!!!!



The hardest part was getting the tank back into the straps.

Total time about 3. 5 hours including running ¼ inch tubing from the two nipples that everyone is talking about and putting filters on them.



Well worth the time for the Mod.

Hey guys - need help!

Have an '05 and tried to install David's Vent Kit and could not get the two fuel line connections off! Had the tank dropped to the end of the threads for some working clearance. Don't really understand how the clip thing works so that may be part of the problem. Know most of you do this mode without problems but I don't seem to get it... ... ...

Re: the pic's in post #7 above. Assume the grey and yellow gizmos are the clips that hold the fuel tubing on..... Are they in the tubing or on the outside of the tubing. Look like they are too big to go inside and too small to go over the tubing.

Then exactly what (with ones fingers, and without being able to see, is one trying to do to the clip to release the pressure to be able to slip the tube off the nipples?

If this is so difficult to get off (for me at least) what about getting it back on latter - Seems to me to be pretty important to be sure both are solidly on at the end of the install. So in the end I gave up not being comfortable that

I could get all back together correctly - If I even got it apart... .

Any words of wisdom would help - I'd like to take another run at this... ...

BTW, I've got an '05 and son has an '0. 45 and would like to do them both...

The green and the grey portion fit inside the end of the hose fitting and the ends of the green and grey plastic clips stick out past the end of the hose. They are pinched to release the clips and the hose come off ... supposedly. I was able to get the larger one off but have difficulty with the small (grey) one. I am planning to try again once I empty the tank again but this time removing the tire and possibly removing the fender support so I can get both hands in there. Trying to use a wire or tie wrap with only one hand exceeded the limits of my dexterity.

In the pics above, the yellow and red caps at the ends of the barbs are just caps that were put on there to keep anything from getting in the barbs while the fuel lines were out. What you're after is the gray and green clips only.

When the fuel lines are on, you'll only see the top part of the clip. You squeeze the top part with your fingers and it pulls the middle of the clip towards the center of the barb. This releases the tabs from the holes in the fuel line and you can pull the fuel line off. You have to squeeze and pull at the same time. Here's a diagram from the service manual that's in the instructions:

You squeeze (1) and pull (2).



Putting the lines back on is very easy. line up the clips with the detents in the fuel lines and you'll feel them click when they go back on. Give them a tug to make sure they are on and you're good to go.
