Fuel tank vent kit

Got it done!

Well, I got the tank vent mod installed, today! Man, it took a while to get off the forward fuel hose. Body & arms contorted and working by feel. Interrupted by a thunderstorm. I finally grabbed a pair of pliers and gripped the hose near the connector and rotated it enough to unlatch that connector. Next step was to remove the rear tire to gain a little better access, but, didn't have to once the pliers trick worked. Poured in about one gallon of diesel and headed off to filler-up. Was able to cram in 40. 02 gallons! And, it filled quickly after clicking off. First time I ever saw liquid fuel in the downspout!

SpooledUp - do you have the some image for disconnecting the electrical connector? More specifically, I am looking to see which way the red lock tab slides (to the front or rear of truck) to disengage the connector without breaking it as I have done in the past to other connectors!

Open your hood and look at the driver's side engine bay wall. You will see some connectors there that are exactly like the ones on the sending unit. You can see how they work there.

So... I am very interested in doing this tank vent mod to my truck but... I don't want to spend 60 dollars for what looks like a few brass fittings? does anyone have a parts list of what actually comes with the kit so I can source the parts locally? I know I'm cheap but i gotta try. Thanks guys.

You can decide how you want to spend the $60. You can pay the TDR member as I did, or spend a half a day running around trying to find everything. The kit is a very worthwhile modification. With other modifications (a lot more than $60!) my '03 now has an easy 800+ mile highway cruising range.

With my 34 gallon tank and this fuel vent mod, I am able to get 38 gallons in there.
Quick fillups, with 800+ mile range.

I chickened out and pulled the PU bed off the truck.

My shop has a picking eye to hang a hoist which helped.

Not really all that much work to take it off and everything is right there in front of you.

The connecters were plenty hard to remove even with complete access.

Really like the mod, one of the best things you can to to your truck.

The cost and work is long forgotten. (Mine is from Glacier)

Removing the Bed

I have been thinking about removing my bed to do the fuel tank mod. How many things do I have to disconnect and/ or unbolt for the removal? How many people are needed to 'easily' lift off bed and reinstall?

Any tips/ideas would be appreciated. TIA

At least several more than are required to lower the near-empty fuel tank.

I've dropped my tank twice, first to install the vent kit and most recently to install the in-tank pump. It really isn't that hard to disconnect the lines, and it took me just a couple minutes on both occasions. If you don't have monkey hands, I suppose it can take a bit longer. What took the longest time was finding the instructions that had the pics of the connector.

I also slung tie straps under the tank from frame rail to rail to support the tank as it came loose. To lift the tank back up, I used ratcheting tie straps and just clicked it up. It made it really easy because I still had at least 2-3 gallons in the tank and once that fuel gets sloshing, it can get the tank pitching fore and aft pretty good. Of course I didn't come up with that idea until the 2nd time I dropped the tank. The first time I just manhandled it by myself (but it had less than a gallon in it). I looked like a cat on its back playing with a ball of yarn.

I got mine off by saying to my son John. . "will you help me get this tank off". In about 10 min. it was off.

THe vent is a great thing but there is a possible problem.

THe vent line has to be supported in a horizontal position through out. If it dips down and fills with fuel it acts as a plug and will not allow you to fill the tank w/o it spraying back in your face.

I regularly put 38 gals into my tank now.

Just finished installing vent and doing first fill. I ran down tank until gauge would just move off lower notch. Then used a small diameter tube to siphon rest of fuel. Took a while, but started at night and I didn't care how long. Got about 4 gallons out to make really empty. Glad I did, 4 gallons weighs a bit. To make sure I didn't have a loop in vent that would hold fuel, I made it loop up so will drain back to tank or to filler neck. Did first fill tonight and put in 36. 5 gals. Means I'm carrying 40 gallons. Filled up fast and easy. It was some monkeying around, but I'm pleased with the result.
