question for mullenax-what is the deal with the vents on the 3rd generation fuel tanks? You just mentioned in another post to HB that his vent hoses needed extended, I'm pretty sure there are a lot of rigs running around with no hoses at all, including mine.

My 04. 5 has two indention's in the top of the tank with vents. After hearing about a lot of folks ending up with dirt and trash in their tanks and the short lived lift pumps. I looked at the top of mine I could see if a lot of dirt or mud was to accumulate on top of the tank and cover the vents it would be likely to be sucked into the tank as the tank vented. I put about two foot of fuel line on each vent along with plastic fuel filters and placed them in the frame to suck clean air. I have a fuel pressure gauge to monitor the lift pump and so far no problems at 90,000. I have noticed the new replacement lift pump now come with a pre screen filter to help catch trash before entering the lift pump.

I also added a few feet of hose with small plastic filters to my tank. On the 09 it seems the vents are not in indentations any more but the vent was open and unfiltered and that was enough for me to not feel comfortable.

There was an article in the TDR this issue about vents for tanks and either some new parts available or TSB's... . I don't remember which as we've upgraded all ours to run 2 tanks and have the fuel balance out... .
