Chasman, I have a Stant locking fuel cap on my Ram. It is THE VERY SAME thing as sold by Mopar.

That said, I used to have the same type/brand of locking gas cap on my previous 4x4. I experienced the same scenario you relayed... the cheap thing broke right in my hands when trying to remove it to add gas. In all fairness, I had about 98k on my truck at the time, adding that fuel cap the day I purchased my new truck.

I purchased a new cap and sold it a month or so later to buy my Ram.

A couple of years ago, I heard on our local news, that 2 guys tried to steal some gas. They were stealing it from a funeral parlor at night. They were putting it into a 5 gal. pail after poking a hole in the gas tank of a Ford van. They used a lighter to see how much gas they had and burned the van and the parlor to the ground. It had been sitting under the porch. I think they survived with some nasty burns. DA's, got what they deserved.

The first remedy that came to my mind was a 30-06 but maybe that trick with a dummy tank and some sugar and gas added would be more entertaining. Besides... I hate shooting someone with a 50 cent bullet that ain't worth 10 cents. Isn't it a shame? Some people are so worthless that they're not worth killin'. :)

LOL! I just saw your response Bill. :D :-laf :-laf:-laf

Ok, ok, I sold my previous 4x (with a new Stant gas cap) to purchase my new (then) Ram.

:D

The mopar cap is the way to go. I encountered a parts store model early in my search that required you to use the key to take it off AND put it back on. Cheap POS!

By the way, the aforementioned cartoon reminded me of another favorite site, stickdeath.com . Be forewarned a sick sense of humor, and little tolerance for stupid people is in order. Also a very law enforcement friendly site. The guy has some awesome ideas. You will laugh till you:{

Just to reiterate...

the Mopar fuel cap is made by Stant. If you have the two side by side you will not notice any difference.

Can the mopar cap be made to work with the existing ignition key or do you need to carry around yet another one? I already can't remember what half the keys are for.

That's what I like, :) , a clear unambiguous answer. Here's another one - how can a loose cap cause the check engine light to come on?

Jim

rfcom, A loose GAS cap (not diesel) can cause a check engine light because the vehicle has an evaporative leak detection system... ... . thank you E. P. A. ! I have not seen evaporative leak detection systems on diesel vehicles yet.

With all this discussion and some travelling plans coming up, I went to my friendly dealer yesterday and picked up a new Mopar locking cap for $9. Yet another key (and backup) to keep up with.

My stealer charged me 16. 00 for my cap. PN # 1-05278655AB (new number he says). Guess everything is more in California.

Please refrain from the generic use of the word, "stealer" on the TDR website. Feel free, however, to post specific details about good - as well as bad - experiences with any dealership.

My thoughts are as follows:

Since all the trucks & cars & vans use the same cap (same locking cap # for all), it cheaper to print all the caps instead of 2 runs (one w/o & one with). Also, it prevents the "dummies" that put these together from "screwing" up (pun intended). .

SOTSU!!

Loosely crumble up a little piece of aluminum grating material- big enough to wedge down into the fill tube. Any material that will stop a syphon hose, but allow gas to flow should work equally well.
