Well, yesterday afternoon I was sitting on a chair watching the kids play in the front. I was also reading the article in the TDR about replacing the fuel transfer pump. A little later, after dark, I was on my way to work when the engine died. It is making the classic symptoms of the failure of the fuel transfer pump. It runs for a few seconds then dies. I get a clicking sound from the transfer pump instead of buzzing at ignition on. 60,000 miles. Well, now I get to order the pump from Genos. I sure wish I had done that before and had one around.

Does anyone know of a local Orange County CA connection for the transfer pumps where I could pick one up and not wait several days for shipping? Pep Boys can get a Carter replacement for about the same price as Genos but it will take a few days. I would rather give Genos the business because their customer service is top notch.

thanks

Tom

If your engine still has warranty remaining, you may be eligible for the in-tank replacement. Is your current lift pump on the fuel filter housing? Some have had the in-tank performed under warranty with $0. 00 deductible and others have reported paying a $100. 00 deductible.

Some like the reliability of the in-tank; others like the ease of change of the lift pump mounted on the fuel filter housing.

My 36k warranty expired some time ago. Is it covered under the engines 100k warranty? I did not purchase an extended warranty.

If I am reading my warranty correct, this may be covered under California Emission warranty (long term, 7 yrs or 70,000 miles). My truck is 4 yrs and has 60,000 miles. That warranty covers Fuel system: Fuel pressure sensor, fuel pump, injectors, electronic control module.

That would be good. The local dealer is about a mile away. Has anyone had trouble getting their fuel pump replaced under those miles?

The truck was towed to the dealer. I will post when I hear what they have to say about it. Prior to that I put a new fuel filter in and there is no fuel filling up the filter housing. That included bumping the starter multiple times. I just hear clicking, no buzzing from the pump.

The lift pump in my '03 went south on me last week at 95k. I ordered one from Geno's on Tuesday, $179 when they opened in Georgia at 0830. Had it 2nd day air shipped to my house in Seattle and had it in by late Thursday afternoon. The UPS 2nd day air was less than $10. 00 more than the regular shipping which would have had a 10-14 day estimated delivery time. I followed the instructions that came with the pump and other's I found in the TDR "search" . "Originally published in Issue 60 of the TDR. " The installation took me a couple hours, if this one fails before my memory goes, I should be able to do it again in 15-30 min. The result... the '03 HO purrs like a kitten again. I may eventually go with a FAAS set up, but seeings I was caught off-guard, I went for the quick fix. A PSI gauge will be next on the list, it could have saved me the rodeo of getting it home the first time. Good Luck. Sorry I couldn't find the instruction link again. If I come across it I'll send it.

You should not have to pay anything for this job. Above the 3/36 warantee is a 7 year/ 100,000 mile warantee on the Cummins. The only charges for any engine work come after the truck is 5 years old. The dealer will then charge a $100. 00 deductible per service visit. At 4 years and 60k you will have no charges.

You can check this at dodge.com.

Go to the "For Owners" in the top right, then "Warranty" in the middle under "Servicing & Operating My Vehicle". Pick your year and model and the first page has a bar chart of all the warantees. Cummins is towards the bottom.

Good luck,

Anthony

Sorry about the delay but work has been busy.

The dealer covered the repair (in tank pump) under warranty and was actually very nice about it. Maybe because I sent a copy of the 7/70 California long term emission parts warranty and highlited the fuel pump as being covered. The dealer quoted about $1,400 for the repair (if not under warranty) but that sounds a little high.

Thanks to all who chimed in.
