Fuel transfer pump ?

Truck is in the shop since Friday waiting for a transfer pump. How many out there have had this problem? and could it cause fuel pump damage? I felt it falter the day before at around 50 mph under hard acceleration. It was -42 below at the time and the operating temp was up almost to normal.

There have been a "spackling" of lift pump failures on 3rd gen engines. The bad news is yes, it is possible to damage the CP-3 with a bad lift pump. The good news is you'll know right away if it was damaged, so there's little chance of you driving around without knowing it. If it runs fine when they replace the lift pump then I'd say the CP-3 is probably fine. I would say its unlikely that the CP-3 was damaged unless the lift pump was bad for a long time.



How ironic that here we are talking about 3rd generation trucks and we're still dealing with lift pump problems. There is a woman I work with whose husband is an engineer for Honda. She says they occassionally read some Honda message boards and they have people who research the boards looking for widespread problems and what-not. On the one hand, I want to believe Cummins/Dodge do the same thing. On the other hand, if they're reading things here why have they still not engineered a better low pressure fuel system?

According to a ... . at DCX, The In-Tank Pump is the way to go, LOTS of testing and no failures. In Tank pump is not subject to the engine mounted pump which gets all the vibrations. The vibrations then cause the electric motor brushes to get some vibrations and eventually they arc, which causes a rough surface and the brushes wear out and the motor quits... ...

Now that's an interesting thought...



Could you buy the pump assembly for a 2005 and slide it into the fuel tank of a 2003? Of course, by the time you bought the tank module and the 2005 filter canister it'd probably be way more expensive than just getting a FASS or something.

Thanks rbattelle, I'm breathing easier . I'll be waiting till at least Friday this week , that'l be 7 days for a part delivery !! Its coming from Alberta so I wonder if this is a cold temperature deal. By the way your point about re-engineering is a good one. I guesss that DC needs to hear that. I have to replace my upper and lower ball joints as they are finished after 68000 kims of highway driving... .
