6.7 Intermittent Engine Problem

Going forward this will be one of those "ain't broke, don't fix" for me. With 14K on the truck I chose to drain the fuel/water filter. After loosening the star nut, no fluid thru the hose and had to loosen enough to get fluid around the threads. No water evident. Tigthend the nut and felt a "hard plastic to hard plastic" seat. Ran the truck and had a leak. Tighten more and will run it again when I get to it.

How is that seal made there? Dosn't feel like an o-ring.

Thanks!

Need to Vent!

OK, so a simple bleeding of the water/fuel filter is now an event. Removed the thumb screw entirely to see what I got. Both o-rings still in their grooves. Tried several times to remove and replace. Both with the thumb screw bottoming out against the housing and backed off a little. No thread damage. I'll "play" with it one more time but even if it seals I have no confidence. Looks like an entire filter change is in order.

It's not a bad thing as you will most likely end up with the upgraded housing and dual stage filter. If your truck was built before Dec 15, 2008 use PN 68061633AA filter and housing, $44 net, $74 retail. If it was built after that you already have the upgraded housing. Then you just need the filter in filter PN 68061634AA $28 net, $39 retail that fits the new style housing and of course has a new water separator valve.

If you have the old housing do not let the dealer sell you the PN 05183410AA if they have that on the shelf. The new filter and housing is much improved.

By the way, you should probably drain it more often, and change it at least every 15,000 miles. If you have a fuel system problem the dealer is going to request filter change records so hang on to the receipts if you change them yourself.

Chrysler and well as the insurance companies have been denying repairs from fuel contamination if you can't prove you maintained the fuel filters according to the owners manual.

Too Many Filters

Sag2, thanks for the reply.

Looks like the leak stopped. "Found a sweet spot" just before the star nut bottoms out. I don't have much confidence with it now, but it's not leaking.

When I buy new vehicles I buy a large amount of maintaince parts off the get go. So I have a barn full of Fleetgaurd PN-FS43252 filters. I assume these are the old design. Should I just not use them and get the upgrade, or use them up?

Thanks.

drain tube

BTW, what is the deal with the drain on these PIA to get at fuel filters anyway. On both of my 07's I have turned the startnut drain and I can not get any fuel/water to drain out the nipple/hose. You have to turn it all the way until it runs around the threads and makes a mess. Am I doing something wrong?

thanks

EOwen - I have the same problem. My guess is atmospheric pressure is keeping the drain tube from draining until you loosen the threads enough to let a little air up past the threads to allow fuel to come out, but making a mess. Solution is to let your electric fuel lift pump create the internal pressure to allow an easy drain; turn your ignition key to RUN (no need to actually start the engine) for a few seconds to build that pressure, then drain. Someone else posted the solution to this problem (THANKS!), a while back, elsewhere on the forum , somewhere in the 5. 9L engine section I think. If anyone else has a better method for these 6. 7's, let us in on it. Thanks.
